Resident Evil 4: Gold Edition – How to Plan Switch 2 Storage for Launch

FinalBoss5 min read
The three Resident Evil remakes need about 55.9 GB together on Nintendo Switch 2, with Resident Evil 4: Gold Edition accounting for 29 GB. Reserve 60-65 GB for all three, or consider a microSD Express card if your internal storage is tight.

Capcom’s Switch 2 rollout has two dates to plan around: the remakes reach the eShop on October 16, 2026, while physical editions follow on January 29, 2027. For the digital launch, set aside at least 32 GB for Resident Evil 4: Gold Edition, or 60-65 GB for all three games. Preorders are open, so storage preparation can happen before release day.

Switch 2 download sizes for the Resident Evil remakes

The eShop sizes apply to Resident Evil 2 Deluxe Edition, Resident Evil 3 and Resident Evil 4 Gold Edition. Check the edition name when planning your download: the Deluxe and Gold listings include additional content alongside their base remakes.

Switch 2 releaseListed download size
Resident Evil 2 Deluxe Edition14.0-14.1 GB
Resident Evil 312.9 GB
Resident Evil 4 Gold Edition29.0 GB
All three combined55.9–56.0 GB

Resident Evil 2’s regional listings differ slightly, with some showing 14.0 GB and others 14.1 GB. That makes roughly 56 GB the useful combined figure for planning. The tenth-of-a-gigabyte difference is much smaller than the spare capacity you should leave available.

Resident Evil 4 Gold Edition takes slightly more than half of the combined total. If you are buying that game alone, use its 29 GB listing as your starting point; downloading the two Raccoon City remakes together requires approximately 26.9–27.0 GB.

How much free space to reserve before downloading

Nintendo’s displayed sizes are estimates, and the space required to install downloaded software can be greater or smaller than the listing. Leave a buffer instead of clearing exactly 55.9 GB and expecting every installation to fit.

Your purchaseRecommended free space before installation
Resident Evil 4 Gold Edition onlyAt least 32 GB
Resident Evil 2 Deluxe Edition and Resident Evil 3At least 30 GB
All three remakes60–65 GB

For all three games, 70 GB or more free before installation is a better target if you also want room for updates and your next purchase. These are planning allowances: the extra space provides breathing room for installation requirements and later downloads, without assigning a specific size to future patches.

Check the free space on the storage location you intend to use. A card’s advertised capacity tells you little about what remains after your existing games, screenshots and recordings. If internal storage already has 65–70 GB free, it can accommodate this launch without a new card.

When a microSD Express card is worth buying

A microSD Express card becomes useful when keeping all three remakes installed would crowd out your existing library. Compatibility matters here: Switch 2 uses microSD Express for expanded game storage. An ordinary microSD card from an older console is not a direct substitute.

Storage choiceFit for this releasePractical tradeoff
64 GB microSD ExpressThe roughly 56 GB package fits within the nominal capacity on paperLeaves little room for updates or other software
128 GB microSD ExpressPractical minimum for occasional digital buyersProvides useful headroom beyond these three downloads
256 GB microSD Express or largerBetter suited to a growing digital libraryReduces the need to move or remove games as you add larger releases

The 64 GB calculation is the trap: the combined download occupies most of the card’s advertised capacity before you account for further storage needs. A 128 GB microSD Express card is the more practical starting point for this purchase.

Choose 256 GB or more if these remakes are joining several other large digital games. That recommendation is about keeping more software installed; the download figures provide no basis for promising a performance improvement from a larger card.

Physical editions arrive on January 29, 2027

The October 16 launch is digital. Boxed editions follow on January 29, 2027, more than three months later, so a physical purchase cannot serve as an October launch-day storage workaround.

If you want to play on October 16, prepare space for the digital edition before downloads begin. If you are waiting for a boxed copy, your purchase window is January 29.
