“The Grail” is not a release promise; it is Riot’s admission that a successful League of Legends MMO must clear an unusually high bar. At PAX West, co-founder Marc Merrill called the project a “big risk” and said the key question is whether Riot can deliver on the hopes players already attach to Runeterra. His comparison came with a warning: many “brave knights” fail on a Grail quest.
That framing matters because Riot did not merely delay an established plan. In March 2024, the studio reset the MMO’s direction after deciding its earlier concept was too close to the conventional “mothership” MMO model. The problem was identity, not simply unfinished content. A League MMO cannot rely on familiar quests, raids, classes and progression systems unless Riot can show why its version of those ideas belongs specifically in Runeterra.

The game is still active five years after Riot publicly announced the MMO in August 2021, but it has no official title, platforms, combat details or release date. Merrill said in February 2025 that he spent more time on the MMO than any other project and that the team had found “a great direction,” yet the studio has kept the rebuilt vision largely private. Riot had also warned in 2024 that players should not expect substantial news for several years.

Execution now covers more than making a large map and recognizable League locations. Riot must establish a clear gameplay identity, launch with enough systems and content to retain players, and manage expectations built by League’s characters, regions and competitive legacy. Its decision to end active development on fighting game 2XKO at the end of 2025, citing retention and sustainability problems, adds practical weight to concerns about live-service scale.

The next meaningful Riot MMO update will need concrete product language: a final design premise, setting scope, combat or class structure, platform targets, named leadership, or a narrower release framework. Until then, “the Grail” accurately describes both the ambition and the distance still left to cover.
