RPCS3 Expands Direct PS3 Blu-ray Booting to Linux, macOS and FreeBSD

The significant change is procedural: a PS3 disc no longer has to be copied to local storage before RPCS3 can attempt to run it. The emulator can read the original Blu-ray in a compatible drive and decrypt it while the game loads. That makes an owned physical disc usable as the active game source rather than merely the material needed to create a dump.

Direct disc-drive play previously worked on Windows. An August 31 merge extended the path to Linux, macOS and FreeBSD, bringing it across RPCS3’s main desktop operating systems. The update also optimised package-install times when installing from the disc drive. It is a useful expansion for collectors and preservation users operating outside Windows, but it is not a universal plug-and-play solution.

The setup has two fixed requirements. First, the Blu-ray drive must be capable of reading PS3 discs in a way that exposes their file structure to the operating system; users can test this by inserting a game and checking whether its files are browseable. Not every optical drive qualifies. Compatible families listed for the workflow include drives from LG, ASUS, Samsung, Lite-On, Sony, HP, Plextor and BenQ, although exact working models vary.

Second, “direct” does not mean keyless. Each disc release requires its matching Redump decryption key, placed in RPCS3’s data/redump directory. RPCS3 scans that location when loading the disc, then reads and decrypts the media on the fly. The drive is added as a game location, replacing the extracted-folder path used in the conventional workflow.

This matters as physical-media preservation gains urgency ahead of Sony’s planned January 2028 halt to new PlayStation disc production. A physical disc, compatible reader and correct key can preserve a locally controlled route to older software without relying on an online storefront. It does not bypass normal RPCS3 compatibility limits, so users should verify both their drive and the emulator status of a specific game before treating direct boot as a replacement for dumped files.
