Making established characters unable to share boss content with friends who choose RuneScape Reignited is a lousy foundation for a remaster. I can get behind a fresh economy and a clean leaderboard. Making friends’ character choices determine whether they can play together crosses a line, especially in a game where those relationships have outlasted countless updates.
That is the problem Jagex needs to fix. Its apology deserves credit for accepting responsibility, but the review has to change the rules that produced the backlash. Preserving a veteran’s title while leaving their bossing group divided would be an embarrassingly small response to a structural problem.

What Jagex has actually put under review
Presented at RuneFest 2026, RuneScape Reignited’s original design required new characters, with no transfers from existing characters. Its unique servers would start progression, the player-driven economy and hi-scores afresh. Veteran and Reignited characters would occupy separate progression environments, with restrictions preventing them from trading with one another or sharing boss content.
The announced release date is December 2, 2026. That is the original schedule; the review has not supplied a final replacement design or settled what revisions mean for that date.
In its October 6 apology, Jagex accepted that it had made existing players feel they were no longer its focus. Its revision priorities include giving Veteran progress meaningful representation, preventing a lasting community split and reconsidering restrictions between the two character types. Separate membership is also under review.
The October 9 update went further into possible solutions: a way for an existing character to be “Reignited,” alongside potential carryover for cosmetics, holiday rewards, prestigious titles, skill pets and bank spaces. Those are proposals being explored. They give the review a useful direction, but players still need the rules before they can make sensible account decisions.
The community split is the biggest problem
A fresh-start mode can attract someone who finds an established economy intimidating. Starting alongside other new characters has an obvious appeal: early equipment matters again, the leaderboard is open, and progression happens without decades of accumulated wealth surrounding it. I want Jagex to preserve that appeal.
The trouble starts when those fresh-start rules reach beyond progression and determine who can participate together. A clan can retain the same name and chat while losing the ability to assemble its usual bossing group. A returning friend can choose Reignited and become unavailable for the content an existing group already runs. Keeping everyone inside the broader RuneScape ecosystem does little for that particular evening’s plans.
This is why I find the promise to prevent a permanent split more important than any cosmetic transfer. Players do not need their accounts deleted to feel displaced. Their achievements can remain intact while the people they earned them with move into a mode their characters cannot meaningfully join.

Shared bossing does introduce a real design challenge. Established gear and progression could give fresh-start characters an advantage if encounters and rewards cross the boundary carelessly. Jagex needs to explain which activities can be shared, how rewards remain compatible with each mode, and where restrictions are necessary. Simply keeping every restriction is easier for the studio, but it leaves players carrying the cost.
Keep veteran wealth out of the fresh economy
Here is where I disagree with the broadest demand for transfers: importing existing currency and equipment would undermine Reignited’s fresh-start premise. If established wealth arrives on day one, the supposedly new economy immediately inherits an old hierarchy. New players would be starting from scratch beside accounts that brought their purchasing power with them.
Restrictions on wealth transfers so make sense. The original prohibition on trading between Veteran and Reignited characters has a defensible economic purpose. The review should preserve that protection while examining whether other restrictions serve it at all.
Holiday rewards, prestigious titles and cosmetic unlocks are stronger candidates for carryover because they represent account history without directly supplying currency or combat equipment. Skill pets also belong in that discussion, although Jagex needs to specify how existing pets would coexist with fresh-start achievement tracking. Recognition should be legible rather than creating confusion about what a character earned within Reignited.
Bank spaces deserve closer scrutiny than a celebratory list of transferable extras suggests. Storage capacity affects how players manage resources and progression, even when it brings no items across. I would rather see Jagex explain that tradeoff than casually group bank space with a holiday outfit.
The useful distinction is between preserving identity and importing an advantage. A category-by-category transfer policy can draw that line. Vague assurances about respecting veterans cannot.
“Reigniting” an existing character needs precise safeguards
The possibility of Reigniting an existing character is the most consequential idea in the review. It could let players retain their identity while voluntarily taking on fresh-start rules. It could also create a new account-management headache if the process is destructive, difficult to reverse or incompatible with continuing to play Veteran content.
Jagex has not defined how that process would work. Before anyone commits an established character, the revised proposal needs to spell out:

- What happens to the original: whether Reigniting creates a separate version of the character or changes the existing one.
- What remains accessible: whether the player can continue using their Veteran progression and participating in Veteran content.
- Whether the decision is reversible: what returning to the previous state involves, and what progress is retained.
- What crosses the boundary: explicit treatment of currency, equipment, skills, quest progress, unlocks, titles, pets, cosmetics and bank space.
- How the character is ranked: which achievements count toward Reignited hi-scores and how carried-over recognition is distinguished.
My recommendation is to leave established characters untouched while those mechanics remain undefined. An exploratory idea provides no basis for committing years of account progress. Jagex needs to make the consequences understandable before asking players to opt in.
One membership should cover both experiences
The announced launch offer gives players 10 days of premium membership, with free access from December 2 to December 12, 2026, and a subscription required afterward. The separate-membership question is now under review; the final arrangement for existing members remains unsettled.
I think current membership should cover both Veteran and Reignited play. Asking an existing member to create another character already introduces friction. Requiring separate membership to follow friends into the remastered experience would compound it, particularly while the two character types face restrictions on playing together.
The 10-day window gives people time to sample the mode. It does not answer how they will maintain access afterward. Jagex’s next design update needs to state plainly whether current membership covers Reignited, whether an additional subscription is required, and how access works if an existing character is Reignited. Those details belong beside the character rules, because players have to plan around both.
The apology earns attention; the redesign must earn trust
Jagex identified the right failure: established players felt pushed away from the game they had helped sustain. Exploring character Reigniting and greater preservation of account history is a worthwhile response. Neither idea resolves the backlash until the studio shows how it will preserve actual participation.
I would judge the revised plan by whether friends can still play meaningful content together, existing characters retain usable value, fresh-start competition remains protected, and membership does not become another barrier. Cosmetics alone cannot meet that standard.
My verdict is straightforward: keep Reignited’s economy fresh, make restarting genuinely voluntary, and remove every community barrier that lacks a clear gameplay justification. If Jagex retains mandatory new identities, isolated bossing groups and separate membership while offering veterans a few transferable keepsakes, it will have preserved the problem that forced the apology.
