Steam’s Australian R18+ Block Is Bigger Than a Doom Store Page

This is a storefront-level restriction, not a patch to Doom or Doom Eternal. Australian Steam accounts can be prevented from seeing R18+ product pages, search results and other mature-content surfaces until the account completes Valve’s new age-assurance flow. Players who already own mature games can still play them; the immediate change is access to Steam’s shop.

The enforcement began on September 9 under Australia’s Age-Restricted Material App Distribution Services Code. Steam’s prompt directs users to add a valid Australian credit card, complete the check, then update their Mature Content Preferences. A standard bank debit card is not accepted in the official flow. Individual users have claimed some debit products work, but Valve has not confirmed any debit-card exceptions, nor whether prepaid or virtual cards qualify.

The card requirement creates a sharper barrier than a simple “confirm you are 18” screen: adults without an eligible credit card cannot currently restore mature-store browsing through Steam’s stated route. The card may also need to remain stored on the account; removing it can return the account to an unverified state. Valve has not published Australian-specific public terms explaining data retention or whether it will introduce ID or facial-age alternatives.

That makes Steam an outlier beside other Australian storefront changes. Epic Games Store is requiring users to confirm they are 18 or older before purchasing or downloading R18+ games, while leaving already-owned games and lower-rated content alone. Epic is using Kids Web Services for new third-party verification options. Microsoft and Xbox are also rolling out Australian age verification for R18+ apps and games, with VerifyMy offering routes including a secure selfie and government-issued ID.

Third-party Steam keys from sellers such as Fanatical or Green Man Gaming may still be redeemable, but that does not guarantee access will bypass the mature-store gate. The next point to watch is whether Valve clarifies accepted Australian card types or adds a non-card verification route.
