Stormgate
Stormgate is a free-to-play, next-gen RTS from the team at Frost Giant Studios, including former developers of Warcraft III and StarCraft II. Command mechs to…
Stormgate has been on my radar ever since a few ex-Blizzard developers touted it as “the StarCraft successor RTS fans deserve.” Now that Frost Giant Studios is pulling the trigger—officially exiting Early Access on August 5, 2025, with the 12-mission Ashes of Earth campaign—I’m both excited and cautious. Can it truly recapture that old-school RTS magic in 2025, or is it all clever marketing?
A robust single-player campaign is the lifeblood of a top-tier RTS. StarCraft’s legendary missions and sharp writing set a bar few can clear. Ashes of Earth promises a cohesive 12-chapter arc focused on the human Vanguard faction, backed by a star-studded cast. Good voice acting won’t hide poor mission design, though: key questions at launch will include mission variety, AI behavior and whether story beats feel genuinely integrated into gameplay rather than tacked on.

Including rollback netcode—a feature more common in fighting games than RTS—is a bold move that speaks to Frost Giant’s competitive aspirations. Day-one balance across all factions is another claim that demands scrutiny. Veteran RTS designers often warn that initial balance patches rarely hold up under hundreds of hours of ladder play. Still, giving tournament organizers and hardcore players a stable starting point is a welcome gesture.
From my time modding classics like Warcraft III, I know how vital community maps and co-op modes can be. Stormgate ships with a co-op suite and a built-in map editor, but both are labeled work-in-progress. Early tools can be clunky—expect improvements over time. And for those eyeing Team Mayhem 3v3, patience will be required until its slip into later 2025.

The free-to-play model lowers the entry barrier, but it also raises red flags about pay-to-win mechanics. Frost Giant has pledged cosmetics-only monetization and regular content drops, yet the proof will be in the post-launch roadmap. A fair skin-and-key-art economy, coupled with free balance updates and community events, will be crucial to maintain trust.

If you’re burned out on replaying the same five RTS classics or frustrated by half-baked indie efforts, Stormgate demands your attention. Treat its launch-day promises—especially around balance and narrative polish—with a dose of healthy skepticism. Marketing may call it “polished,” but reality will be defined by ladder matches, community feedback and Frost Giant’s ability to deliver on future updates.
