Game-Key Cards create an obvious problem for players with unreliable internet: the physical card can start the installation process, but the game data must first exist on a console. Switch 2 has a useful local workaround. A fully installed Game-Key Card title on one Switch 2 can send its program data to another Switch 2 over local wireless, with neither system connected to the internet.
The function sits under Nintendo’s Match Version with Local Users option. It was built to share game updates locally, but it can transfer the installed Game-Key Card package: the base game data held on the source console plus the patches already installed there. In a low-connectivity household, one console with a completed installation can effectively act as a local installation source for another.
That matters, but the boundary needs to be clear. This is a program-data transfer. It does not move the physical card’s access requirement, transfer save files, or create a second valid ownership license for simultaneous play. The Game-Key Card remains part of the process.
The easiest way to understand the feature is to separate the game into two layers. The first is the program payload: files stored on internal storage or a microSD Express card, including the version and patches installed on the source Switch 2. The second is authorization: the Game-Key Card and any account-linked content checks required to start the title.
Local wireless handles the first layer. It can fill Switch 2 B with the same installed build held by Switch 2 A without contacting Nintendo’s servers. It does not duplicate the second layer. A single Game-Key Card remains a single physical access token, so the useful scenario is moving the card and the installed data to the target console rather than trying to run the same purchase on two systems at once.
This distinction also explains why the feature is valuable without solving the broader preservation argument around Game-Key Cards. A household with two Switch 2 systems can seed an offline installation from one console to the other. A player with one console, one unopened Game-Key Card, and no downloaded copy still needs an initial source for the game files.
The wording can vary slightly by system menu version, but the workflow is straightforward. Start with the source system fully prepared; an offline target console cannot fetch missing files once the transfer begins.
A completed transfer screen is useful, but it does not prove that the target has every necessary file. The sensible test is mechanical: keep the target offline, insert the Game-Key Card, and verify the installed version and launch behavior before depending on it away from a connection.

Local transfer is a useful system function, but it has no tolerance for missing fundamentals. Storage limits are the most mundane failure point. A target console can begin the process and still lack room for the complete package once patches are included.
Version state is the second problem. The function is designed around matching local program versions, so Switch 2 A needs the desired complete build before it becomes the source. An outdated source console cannot supply a patch it does not have. If Switch 2 B receives incomplete data, it has no internet connection available to repair the installation.
Authorization is the third boundary. Program data may be present on Switch 2 B, but the target still needs the Game-Key Card when the title checks for it. Account-linked extras and separately acquired downloadable content should also be treated as separate access cases. Copying files between consoles does not transfer purchase rights.
Regional and release differences deserve the same caution. Local matching works best when both consoles are working with the same game release and program version. A different regional release, a different account context, or a conflicting existing installation can prevent a clean match. Remove ambiguity before travelling with a Game-Key Card title and expecting the transferred copy to behave like a self-contained cartridge release.
The local-transfer feature improves Game-Key Card practicality for families, shared households, military housing, travel setups, and any location where broadband is limited or temporarily unavailable. One completed installation can seed another system without consuming another large download or relying on a stable connection at the point of transfer.
It does not erase the differences between a full game cartridge and a Game-Key Card. A traditional cartridge stores the core game on the card itself. A Game-Key Card relies on installed console storage, and this workaround relies on a second Switch 2 that already holds the needed data. That is a meaningful improvement in a two-console household, but it remains a dependency chain: source installation, available storage, local wireless, and the physical card.
The distinction is particularly relevant while publishers define their Switch 2 upgrade policies. Square Enix’s Switch 2 versions of Octopath Traveler and Octopath Traveler II do not offer an upgrade path from their Nintendo Switch versions, and Nintendo Switch save data cannot transfer to the Switch 2 editions. Local Game-Key Card transfer cannot fix that kind of product split. It copies installed program data between Switch 2 systems; it does not convert an older release into a new one or migrate incompatible saves.
