Variable Refresh Rate was previously limited to Switch 2’s handheld use, leaving TV-mode players without a tool designed to reduce tearing and smooth uneven frame pacing. Version 23.0.0 closes that gap, synchronizing the display refresh rate with a game’s processing when the game and connected screen both support VRR.
VRR needs more than the console update
Updating the system software is only the first step. Dock the Switch 2, install the Nintendo Switch 2 Dock firmware update through Settings → System → Update Dock, then enable VRR Output in the console’s VRR settings. The TV or monitor must also be VRR-compatible. Video Output Information — the renamed display settings page — now provides details about the signals the connected TV can accept.

This is output-side synchronization, not a frame-rate unlock: it cannot make a game render faster than its existing performance allows. Support is also game specific rather than universal. At launch, Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour is the confirmed docked-VRR example, so players should not assume every Switch 2 title will activate the feature immediately.
Other 23.0.0 additions
The update adds Transfer all to Nintendo Switch 2, moving data including save files and screenshots between two Switch 2 systems. My Page → Profile now combines play time for the same software across consoles and orders games played since the update chronologically. Virtual Game Card lists gain a Settings option and device-registration status checks, while online-license access can appear when a card cannot be ejected because the other console is offline.
GameChat now lists chats previously joined, permits joining a new chat without first selecting friends, and lets users change screen size from the C Button menu. Accessibility gains Brazilian Portuguese for Text-to-Speech and GameChat Voice-to-Text. Handheld Mode Boost can be placed in Quick Settings and used with other controllers while Joy-Con 2 controllers remain attached. Mii Maker also gets QR sharing and selectable background music.
For the practical upgrade path: update the console and dock first, confirm the TV’s VRR capability, switch on VRR Output, then check each game’s settings or support notes before expecting smoother docked play.
