The Blood of Dawnwalker: How to Escape Xanthe’s Trap and Choose Her Fate

FinalBoss6 min read

To escape Xanthe’s trap in The Blood of Dawnwalker, clear the enemies in the main room, take the first door ahead and to the left, pull back the bookcase, and drop through the hole behind it. When the room loops, repeat the combat and use only the door marked by a downward-pointing triangular banner with a tentacled eye. Drop down again, then do the same one final time to end the trap. How to escape Xanthe’s trap

The trap is designed to make the repeated chamber feel like a dead end. There is no hidden coordinate, timed switch, or separate route on the second and third loops. The visual rule is the banner: it identifies the correct exit after the first descent.

An earlier note in the castle explains the logic before you reach the dungeon: banners are the route through Xanthe’s maze. The important symbol is easy to misread in the middle of a fight, so look for both details before opening a door: the banner’s triangular shape must point downward, and it must display the tentacled-eye emblem. [2]

First loop: use the left-hand route and the bookcase

  1. Defeat the enemies in the trap’s main room.
  2. Face forward and take the door ahead and to your left.
  3. Search the next area for the movable bookcase.
  4. Pull the bookcase back to uncover a hole.
  5. Drop through the hole.

The bookcase is the one-off part of the puzzle. Do not spend time looking for another shelf after you return to the main room; the later loops use the bannered exit instead.

Second loop: find the tentacled-eye banner

  1. Clear the enemies in the main room again.
  2. Check the doors for the triangular, downward-pointing banner with the tentacled-eye symbol.
  3. Go through the door beside that banner.
  4. Drop down through the next hole.

The enemies returning is part of the sequence. Treat the room clear as the signal to inspect the exits, rather than assuming the fight means you took a wrong route.

Third loop: repeat the banner route to leave

  1. Return to the main room and defeat the next enemy group.
  2. Locate the same downward triangle and tentacled-eye banner.
  3. Use the marked door and drop down once more.

That third descent completes the escape. The reliable shorthand is: first loop, left door and bookcase; every later loop, tentacled-eye banner and hole. [2]

Trap mistakes that waste the most time

  • Searching every door after the first descent: the bannered door is the only route that advances the second and third loops.
  • Looking for a second bookcase: the bookcase only opens the first drop. Subsequent drops come after using the marked door.
  • Ignoring the banner’s direction: match the full symbol. The useful banner is triangular, points down, and carries the tentacled eye.
  • Trying to bypass the main-room fights: the repeated encounters are required progress gates for the looping sequence.

Where the Xanthe sequence fits in The Cycle of Love

Xanthe’s confrontation belongs to The Cycle of Love. The exact lead-in can differ with your campaign state: routes into her content can involve building her anger through court activity or dealing with her soldiers, camps, and transports before the mansion confrontation opens. The trap guide begins once you are already inside the dungeon sequence, so it will not solve an earlier objective that is still blocking access.

For choices that shape your opening route before this quest line, use FinalBoss’s The Blood of Dawnwalker prologue guide. If the repeated encounters are exposing a damage or survivability problem, the early-build guide is the better place to adjust your setup without turning this puzzle route into a build detour.

Spoilers: should you spare or kill Xanthe?

Stop here if you only wanted the trap solution. The remainder covers the story and gameplay consequences attached to Xanthe’s final choice.

Spare Xanthe for a less punishing final route

Sparing Xanthe keeps her alive and avoids the nightmare sequence associated with killing her. It also reduces supernatural and enemy pressure during the final castle assault, making the late-game route easier to manage. Chariklea remains alive on this branch as well. [1]

The tradeoff is immediate power. Sparing Xanthe means giving up the blood-drain reward tied to her death. The Dark Mistress achievement or trophy path remains available because its requirement is defeating Xanthe rather than draining her blood.

This choice can still add hostility elsewhere: Brencis’s soldiers may attack later in the city. That is a manageable cost if the priority is lowering the pressure during the castle finale.

Kill Xanthe for Blood Surge and a harsher endgame

Killing Xanthe opens the blood-drain route and grants the vampiric ability Blood Surge. Choose this branch if a direct vampire-power reward matters more than a smoother final assault.

The cost is a more hostile outcome path. Killing her triggers the nightmare sequence and preserves additional combat and puzzle pressure connected to the late-game route. Xanthe and Chariklea do not survive this branch. [1]

Make the choice after securing your preferred reward

The practical split is clear: spare Xanthe to make the final castle sequence easier and avoid the nightmare path, or kill her to claim Blood Surge while accepting a tougher route afterward. Create a manual save before the decision if you want to see both outcomes without replaying The Cycle of Love.
