Spend the three zero-cost investigations first, finish Deep Down by your fourth spent segment, and skip the extra Latin-study time with Anca unless that relationship is your priority. That route protects Lazar, keeps the Blood Mass deadline under control, and still leaves room for the essential village quests in The Blood of Dawnwalker.
Vale Sangora’s opening day gives Coen eight usable time segments before the Blood Mass. The wider campaign runs on a 30-day and 30-night countdown to Brencis’s coronation, but the immediate trap is much smaller: a conversation, task, or favor can quietly consume one or two segments while free exploration does not advance the clock.
Time only moves when Coen completes a quest or activity, or learns a new ability. Check every prompt before committing: a clock icon marks time-sensitive content, while an hourglass and number show exactly how many segments that activity will spend. Most early quests cost one segment, but extended scenes can double the price.
Shrines are the safe way to move around the valley efficiently. They support fast travel, Skill Point spending, and deliberate time skips. Repair a ruined shrine by finding its heart before relying on it as a travel hub.
This order is built around two priorities: preserve segments and complete Deep Down
| Time segment | Quest or task | Route decision |
|---|---|---|
| Before spending time | Enter Not, Dead Drop, If A Tree Falls In A Forest | Clear all three 0-segment investigations first. |
| 1 | Live Bait | Complete Yanna’s errand, but skip the tag game to avoid turning it into a 2-segment activity. |
| 2-3 | Withering Away | Use hot water and three spoonfuls of herbs for Esme’s medicine. Skip the extra Page-Turner time unless pursuing Anca’s romance route. |
| 4 | Deep Down | Visit Gavril near the fields by Laslea Gate now. This keeps Lazar alive. |
| 5 | Blasphemy | Pick up Gremla’s quest at Laslea Centre. |
| 6 | Disturbed | Speak to Crina outside the keep. Avoid helping refill the grave if preserving the final segment matters. |
| 7 | Like Father, Like Son | Accept Pieter’s training after Withering Away. |
| 8 | Into The Den or a remaining one-segment objective | Use the final segment on loot, training, or the quest that best fits your current goal. |
Into The Den is the cleanest optional final-slot detour when you want combat loot rather than another story branch. The bear den east of the Northern Foothills can reward 100 XP, an Artisan’s Tunic, a Letter with a Tip, a Rebel’s Falchion Sword, and a Turnip.
Avoid starting a two-segment activity in the final slot. On The Run requires two segments, and optional social scenes can leave you short of time for a quest that changes a more important outcome.
For Enter Not, head to the abandoned plague house in the northwest forest. The entrance is not the front door: climb onto the lower roof on the building’s right side, then drop down inside.

This is a strong first stop because it gives useful early information and loot without spending a segment. Finish the interior completely before moving on; returning later gains you nothing in time efficiency.
Dead Drop begins at the flower-covered grave in the outcasts’ burial ground east of town. Follow the hill path east of Coen’s house toward the outcast graveyard, using footprints and carvings to stay on the correct route. The landmark is a large, twisted tree.
Do not leave after finding the letter. The cave is part of the value of this detour, and the whole investigation remains a 0-segment stop.
Start If A Tree Falls In A Forest from the corpse near the Northern Foothills shrine. Follow the trail from the body until it leads into a gorge, then loot the Uriash guard’s body for Orders: Patrol. This is another free investigation, so complete it before any hourglass-marked task.
Withering Away begins automatically through Pieter and takes two segments. When brewing Anca’s treatment for Esme, use hot water and three spoonfuls of herbs. The later section includes a tense exchange between Pieter and Vladimir before the recipe work begins, so finish the conversation path and prepare the ingredients before committing to the brew.
Coen can force-feed Esme at Pieter’s instruction during this early fork. That choice has no long-term impact, so choose the scene response you prefer and focus your planning on the hourglass costs that follow it.
Page-Turner is the optional Anca branch attached to this sequence. Staying with her when it rains costs one extra segment. Take it only when pursuing her later relationship content; completing Withering Away and Page-Turner together uses two time slots in total.

Accept Pieter’s training rather than skipping it. During the sparring sequence, his unblockable attack is usually followed by a fast swing. Dodge the unblockable move, then immediately be ready to block the follow-up instead of trying to counterattack during his recovery.

That rhythm also teaches the game’s two combat styles. Directional combat uses the left-stick direction to line up attacks and blocks. Omnidirectional combat handles attack and block direction automatically, but it drains more stamina. Directional defense is the better default when you can read an enemy’s angle; omnidirectional inputs are useful when the camera or several attackers make manual facing unreliable.
Handle Mert’s rescue at night and prepare the Vampirism tree first. Buy Shadow Dweller and Dimension Reach to open the stealth shortcut to the battlements. This route avoids most of the forced combat at Stoneward Post and keeps the number of soldiers killed low.
Ctrl to sneak, then steal the Prison Keyring from those shelves. The costly mistake here is stealing while the guard can see you. Getting caught wastes four time segments, which can destroy an otherwise efficient prologue route. Wait for Friedo’s facing direction to change rather than rushing the interaction prompt.
In Echoes of Silenced Bells, search St. Tyna’s Convent for the Saint’s Tibia and the Relic of St. Tyna, then use the infirmary signal to turn the convent’s enemies against one another. Ringing it sends the zombie nuns to the soldiers bunkered nearby, killing those soldiers without requiring a direct fight.
The final choice in this quest affects the outcome, so treat the closing dialogue as a real branch rather than a throwaway interaction. The infirmary signal is the important mechanical step: missing it turns a controlled route into a much messier combat approach.
Human Coen learns skills by finding and reading books or manuals. Vampire Coen unlocks abilities by consuming blood, with Corruption increasing through feeding at night. Perks then require points earned through leveling and time investment, so use the early free investigations to gather valuables and information before spending a segment on training or a detour.
Vale Sangora allows an immediate challenge against Brencis, but that fight is an extremely difficult early ending path. Leave it alone when the goal is a complete prologue route: finish the zero-cost checks, keep Deep Down inside the four-segment threshold, and spend the remaining clock on the quests that match your preferred outcome.
