The Duskbloods’ Ranked Matchmaking Has One Clear Goal: Protect New Players

FromSoftware says The Duskbloods will separate players by skill in ranked matchmaking, keeping newcomers away from experienced competitors.

Fairer first matches are the point, not simply a more formal ladder. The Duskbloods puts eight Bloodsworn into timed, phase-based PvPvE battles, where a new player repeatedly running into veterans could make the Switch 2 exclusive difficult to enter. Hidetaka Miyazaki’s answer is skill-aware ranked matchmaking: strong players face other strong players, while newcomers are grouped with newcomers.

Ranked play is coming, but the network test is casual-only

The game’s online manual separates Dusk Battles into Casual Match and Ranked Match, although the current network test only allows Casual Match. Players can queue alone or in duos in that test. FromSoftware has not detailed whether ranked matchmaking will handle solos and duos differently, nor whether rank will be visible in the interface or work primarily behind the scenes.

That distinction matters for both sides of the queue. New players should encounter fewer immediate blowouts while learning movement, combat and objectives. Established competitors will trade easy wins for more consistently demanding matches. FromSoftware has also confirmed leaderboards and a seasonal system, but has not set out reset timing, rewards, or the precise formula used to move players through ranks.

Virtue gives players reasons to keep playing

Victory is not meant to be the only route to progress. Matches award Virtue through PvE and PvP activity, including defeating enemies for Blood Fang Virtue, collecting items for Collector Virtue, killing powerful trespassers for Repulsion Virtue, and capturing ritual points for Pledge Virtue. Capturing a ritual point takes roughly 10 seconds and leaves the player exposed, while another Bloodsworn can steal the point and its Virtue.

Virtue connects to gameplay unlocks such as story content and character customization, reducing the pressure to win every match. In the preview structure, a full battle lasts about 30 minutes over three phases; the bottom two players fall after phase two and the bottom three after phase three, leaving three for the finale. Players have two lives, so one death does not end their run.

For launch-minded players, the practical takeaway is simple: use Casual Match to learn a Bloodsworn and objectives, then expect Ranked Match to become the place where consistent performance — and tougher opposition — matters most.
