Collect both Viper sword diagrams in White Orchard, then plan your armor spending around Temerian gear at level 4 and Nilfgaardian gear at level 10. If your build favors Signs—Geralt’s combat magic—save materials and crowns for Griffin gear rather than buying every intermediate outfit.
The Viper silver and steel swords are useful planned upgrades because their diagrams have fixed locations. Finding a diagram is only the first step: you still need materials, crafting money and a blacksmith, and Geralt must meet the finished weapon’s listed equip requirement.
For armor, light Temerian gear suits an early sword-focused setup, while medium Nilfgaardian armor offers a defensive option in Velen. Griffin is the more focused destination for frequent Sign users. The Warrior’s Leather Jacket supplies an opening chest-piece upgrade if buying a complete outfit would drain your crowns.

Get both Viper sword diagrams in White Orchard
The Viper pair gives you a planned weapon target for each enemy category without relying on a favorable equipment drop. Use silver against monsters and steel against humans and ordinary animals.
- Silver sword: White Orchard Cemetery crypt. Visit the cemetery north of the Mill and search the crypt for the diagram. Treat collecting it and equipping the finished sword as separate tasks; an item’s equip requirement is not a promise that its location will be an easy fight.
- Steel sword: Amavet Fortress Ruins. Head west of the Ransacked Village to the bandit-held ruin and search for the diagram. Collecting weapons from defeated enemies is not a substitute for finding the crafting diagram.
Take both diagrams to a blacksmith, then check the crafting menu for missing ingredients and the finished swords’ requirements before buying materials. Armorers handle armor crafting; a forge alone does not tell you which equipment a craftsman can make.
These are useful opening targets for sword-focused, balanced and alchemy-oriented characters alike. Their main appeal here is straightforward: both diagrams are in the opening region, and you do not need a particular skill-tree setup to pursue them.
Warrior’s Leather Jacket: upgrade the starting chest piece
Early in White Orchard, check an armorer’s crafting menu for the Warrior’s Leather Jacket. It uses Geralt’s starting Kaer Morhen chest armor as an ingredient, so keep that piece until you have decided whether to craft the upgrade.
The White Orchard side quest “Twisted Firestarter” introduces the local armorer. Keep armor crafting separate from your Viper sword plans: the jacket belongs in an armorer’s crafting list, while the swords require a blacksmith.

The jacket is worth considering when you want improved chest protection while preserving money for weapons and materials. It replaces only one piece, so fill the remaining slots with useful loot instead of buying ordinary gloves, trousers and boots merely to make the outfit match.
Temerian armor: the straightforward level 4 purchase
The White Orchard merchant encountered after Geralt’s opening griffin rescue sells the Temerian armor set. The wearable set requires level 4 and is light armor.
Consider it for a sword-first character or an uncomplicated early exploration loadout. Buying finished pieces skips the diagram hunt and material collection, making this a straightforward complete armor upgrade in White Orchard.
Budget for the wearable pieces before buying the associated horse equipment. Saddles, saddlebags and blinders have their own uses, but they do not improve Geralt’s protection in a monster fight. If purchasing the whole outfit would prevent you from crafting both Viper swords, keep the jacket and replace weaker armor slots individually.
The Temerian outfit is additional armor content. If it is missing from the merchant’s inventory, check whether that content is installed for your edition before searching other White Orchard merchants.
Sword of a Thousand Flowers: check Yennefer’s room in Vizima
During the Royal Palace visit after White Orchard, check Yennefer’s room in Vizima for the Sword of a Thousand Flowers. Inspect its equip requirement when you collect it; obtaining a weapon does not necessarily mean you can use it immediately.
Its Sign-related bonuses make it a candidate for Sign-oriented and hybrid builds. Compare its damage and bonuses with your current weapon when you can equip it, particularly if you are heading toward Griffin armor. A named item is not automatically an upgrade.
Evaluate the steel and silver sides of your loadout separately. An improvement in one slot does not solve an outdated weapon in the other, especially when your next objective is a monster contract.
Nilfgaardian armor: level 10 protection at Crow’s Perch
The quartermaster at Crow’s Perch sells the level 10 Nilfgaardian armor set. It is medium armor and a practical option for balanced sword-and-Sign characters or players whose White Orchard equipment is struggling against Velen encounters.

Its role is general defense rather than Sign specialization. For an alchemy-focused character, compare its resistances with your current pieces and decide whether the defensive improvement is worth the purchase.
Sign builds should consider skipping the complete outfit. Check your Griffin crafting requirements before spending: buying Nilfgaardian armor shortly before your planned Griffin upgrade can consume the crowns needed for materials and crafting. A targeted replacement makes more sense if only one weak slot is causing trouble.
As with the Temerian outfit, missing stock can mean the corresponding additional armor content is absent from your installation.
Griffin armor: the early destination for Sign builds
Basic Griffin School armor is crafted from diagrams collected through the Griffin School scavenger hunt in Velen. Its medium armor and Sign-oriented bonuses make it a focused early destination for characters who cast frequently.
Check the equip requirement in your game before scheduling the switch. You can collect diagrams before you can wear the finished equipment, but keep enough money for crafting afterward. The equip requirement, scavenger-hunt encounters and crafting bill are separate hurdles.
For the full diagram route, find the existing guide through FinalBoss.io’s Griffin gear-guide search. Keep the equipment decision here simple: prioritize Griffin when Signs are a regular source of damage or control. A sword-first character can retain suitable light armor or choose Nilfgaardian pieces for protection.
When to replace your early gear
The Viper swords are opening targets, not weapons to preserve at any cost. Velen loot can overtake them, and waiting for a named replacement can leave you fighting with an underpowered sword.
- Compare steel with steel and silver with silver. Evaluate each weapon slot separately so a good steel drop does not distract from an outdated monster weapon.
- Check damage and relevant bonuses together. A Sign bonus matters more to a frequent caster; a sword-focused character should give greater weight to weapon damage and offensive effects.
- Compare armor resistances as well as the armor number. A small increase in raw armor can be a poor trade if it removes useful protection against the enemies you are fighting.
- Check condition before judging an upgrade. Repair a damaged weapon before deciding that it has fallen behind, and include any repair expense when assessing a newly looted replacement.
Keep the starting Kaer Morhen chest armor until the Warrior’s Leather Jacket decision is made, and reserve crafting money after collecting diagrams. A diagram in your inventory provides no combat benefit until its item is made and equipped.
