A potion’s herb cost is normally paid when you first craft it or make an upgrade. Afterward, meditation with suitable strong alcohol replenishes depleted potions, bombs, and decoctions. That distinction determines how much gathering an alchemy build needs: concentrate on ingredients for missing recipes rather than harvesting enough plants to brew another Swallow after every fight.

Check your version before trying mounted gathering
The original release and the official 2022 next-generation update require Geralt to dismount for herb collection. The next-generation herb-looting shortcut collects a plant’s contents in one interaction. It does not harvest every nearby plant or add horseback collection.
The mounted instructions below apply to a remastered or modified setup that specifically supports that interaction. The “Remastered” label alone should not be treated as a guarantee that the feature is available in your installation. Installing the quest Where the Cat and Wolf Play… does not unlock it.
How to collect herbs while riding Roach
In the compatible mounted-gathering implementation, click the left stick while riding close to a harvestable plant. Geralt collects nearby herbs without leaving Roach. This is an active interaction, so merely riding through vegetation does not make every plant enter your inventory.
Keep close to the plant and reduce your pace when lining up the interaction. Galloping past a roadside patch gives you less time to trigger collection before leaving its interaction range. There is no supported collection-distance figure to build a precise route around.

Modified controller layouts can assign a different input. A remapped interaction button also cannot make every object usable from horseback: the installed gathering system still determines which plants and objects accept mounted interaction.
Gather for missing formulas and upgrades
Before leaving a settlement, inspect the recipe you want in the Alchemy menu. Identify whether its missing requirement is a herb, monster component, alcohol, or another alchemical ingredient. This prevents a long gathering trip that cannot resolve the actual shortage.
Celandine is a useful early collection target because it is an ingredient in Swallow. that said, that recipe also needs a drowner brain and alcohol. Collecting additional celandine will not compensate for either missing component. Arenaria serves a similar purpose for players preparing specter oil: gathering the plant contributes to the recipe, but does not supply its other ingredients.
During the early game, collecting a variety of roadside herbs is efficient because your formula collection is still expanding. Once your regularly used items are crafted, give priority to ingredients named in your next upgrade rather than stopping at every familiar plant.
For potion-focused builds, mounted gathering helps expand the available toolkit. It does not change toxicity costs, potion duration, or the need to obtain formulas. Decoction ingredients also include specific monster mutagens and other materials, so broad herb collection must be paired with monster hunting and exploration.

Use existing travel routes through Velen
The most practical gathering route connects places you already need to visit: a notice board, an herbalist, a contract location, and a fast-travel signpost. Roads through fields and woodland margins provide opportunities to approach plants without making a separate farming circuit.
On an outward journey, collect accessible plants along the road. On the return trip, check the opposite verge and settlement outskirts where the route allows it. Avoid a substantial detour for another common herb when your recipe is waiting on a monster component or a formula sold by an herbalist.
The roads around Oreton and Honorton in Velen fit this approach when your objectives already take you there. Where the Cat and Wolf Play… is associated with that area, but it is not an alchemy quest or a dedicated herb-farming route. Its investigations and quest interactions remain separate from any mounted collection available along the journey.
What horseback gathering cannot replace
- Herbalist and alchemist visits: a stockpile of plants does not unlock formulas you have not acquired. Buying the particular ingredient missing from a recipe can also eliminate an unnecessary search.
- Monster-material collection: brains, mutagens, and other creature ingredients still require their own sources. Mounted plant gathering does not collect everything an alchemy recipe needs.
- Investigation and ordinary looting: quest clues, containers, and objects without mounted interaction still require the appropriate on-foot approach.
- Crafting and replenishment: gathering does not automatically craft an available recipe or refill an empty potion. Use the Alchemy menu for creation and upgrades, and meditate with suitable strong alcohol for replenishment.
Plants beyond mounted interaction range still require you to reposition or dismount. Terrain also remains a constraint: herbs inside caves or buildings need an on-foot approach, while underwater buckthorn requires entering the water. A horseback collection command cannot reach those ingredients from the road.
