A bag full of monster mutagens can still leave the Mutation panel unaffordable. Research requires Greater Mutagens, so the colour and grade matter. Before committing your Ability Points, inspect the path to the mutation you want: buying an unrelated branch can leave your intended upgrade several purchases away.
The clean approach is to choose a destination that supports how Geralt already fights, research its prerequisites, then activate the effect. Keep your essential ordinary abilities funded first; mutation research draws from the same Ability Point reserve.

How to unlock mutations through Blood and Wine
You need access to the Blood and Wine expansion. Progress through its opening in Toussaint until a messenger delivers the letter that starts the secondary quest “Turn and Face the Strange.” Reaching a particular level or collecting mutagens does not open the system by itself.
Follow that quest through Professor Moreau’s research facility and complete it. This is the unlock that matters: arriving in Toussaint gives you access to the expansion, while completing Moreau’s quest gives you access to mutation research.
Afterward, open the Character menu and enter the new Mutation section. Select a research node to inspect its Ability Point cost, required Greater Mutagen colours and prerequisites. Researching the mutation makes it available; activating it determines which effect Geralt actually uses.
If the messenger has not arrived, continue the opening Toussaint storyline. If the Mutation section is missing, finish “Turn and Face the Strange” rather than spending points elsewhere in the hope of unlocking it.
How mutations interact with the Remastered skill tree
Mutations sit alongside ordinary character progression. The mutation tree contains 12 mutations, researched outward through connected branches. Later destinations require earlier research and can demand more than one colour of Greater Mutagen.

Only one mutation can be active at a time. Researching several does not stack their central effects. You can build a collection of choices, but the active selection must suit the abilities and resources your current build uses.
Mutation research also unlocks additional slots for ordinary abilities. Those slots are a major part of the payoff: they let you equip more of the skills that make your build function. The active mutation governs which ability types fit its linked slots, so check compatibility before planning to move a combat, Sign or alchemy ability into one.
For the Remastered skill tree, use the costs, prerequisite connections and slot restrictions displayed in your installed version. An older build’s point budget can send you toward the right mutation while still leaving you with the wrong spending plan. Buying an ordinary skill, researching a mutation and equipping an ability are separate decisions.
Which mutation should you pick first?
Your first purchase and your preferred destination are often different. Start with the connected prerequisite that leads toward the effect your build needs. The table below gives the target worth pursuing, rather than implying every target is immediately available when the panel opens.
| Build type | First research direction | Target mutation | Why it fits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sword-focused combat | Required combat prerequisites | Bloodbath | Supports a build that wins through sustained weapon combat. |
| Sign-focused | Connected blue branch | Piercing Cold | A dedicated Sign destination for crowd control and burst effects. |
| Alchemy and toxicity | Connected green branch | Euphoria | Uses toxicity to strengthen sword damage and Sign intensity. |
| Defensive, adrenaline-focused | Prerequisites leading to its defensive effect | Mutated Skin | Rewards a high-adrenaline playstyle with improved survivability. |
| Mixed swords, Signs and alchemy | Basic mutation supporting your most-used damage source | Metamorphosis, later | A broader destination once the core build and research budget are settled. |
| Crossbow-focused | Connected prerequisites for ranged combat | Cat Eyes | Supports crossbow damage; it belongs to a ranged plan rather than a conventional sword build. |
Choose the route your build can actually use
For swords, work toward Bloodbath. Keep your research on the connected combat route and use compatible extra slots for the ordinary combat abilities your damage depends on. A sword build centred on critical hits should not divert into Cat Eyes merely because its description sounds damage-focused: the crossbow emphasis is the deciding detail.
For Signs, work toward Piercing Cold. Follow its blue prerequisites instead of spending early resources on an effect whose payoff depends on toxicity or repeated sword attacks. The extra compatible slots help you retain the Sign abilities that supply damage, control and protection without stripping the build down to make room.
For alchemy, Euphoria is the priority when toxicity is central to your setup. Its value comes from the toxicity you actually maintain through potions and decoctions. A character who rarely uses either should not choose it purely for its reputation. Reserve Greater Green Mutagens for its route and keep enough Ability Points available for the ordinary alchemy abilities that support that playstyle.

For defence, pursue Mutated Skin when you build and retain adrenaline. Its defensive benefit suits that specific rhythm. If your character does not support it, research the branch that strengthens your main attacks first rather than paying for a defensive effect you cannot use consistently.
For a mixed build, make the first purchase serve your most-used damage source. Metamorphosis is a later destination, not a reason to scatter your opening resources across every branch. If your hybrid already relies heavily on toxicity, Euphoria offers a clearer direction because it benefits both swords and Signs.
Spend Greater Mutagens without blocking your next unlock
Greater Mutagens come through monster loot and alchemy. Check your next research node before crafting or committing resources: having the right colour at a lower grade does not meet a Greater Mutagen requirement.
Budget for the remaining prerequisites plus the target, rather than looking only at the target’s displayed price. Advanced routes can require several colours, so collecting green mutagens alone will not cover every later purchase on an alchemy-led build.
Level-up rewards and Places of Power help replenish Ability Points. Put those points toward the next connected research node once your essential ordinary skills are covered. Researching an unrelated mutation solely to chase another skill slot can delay the effect you built the character around.
Fix missing effects and unusable skill slots
- A mutation cannot be researched: inspect its connected prerequisites, Ability Point requirement and every required Greater Mutagen colour. Owning enough of one colour does not satisfy a multi-colour purchase.
- A researched mutation has no effect: activate it in the Mutation section. The effect does not join a stack of previously researched mutations.
- An ordinary ability will not fit an extra slot: check the active mutation’s compatibility restrictions. An unlocked slot does not accept every ability type.
- The build feels weaker after changing mutations: check whether the new effect matches your actual play. Low toxicity limits Euphoria’s value, and a crossbow-focused effect does little for a sword-led combat plan.
Before leaving the Character menu, check the active mutation and fill its compatible unlocked slots. Research alone does not finish the build.
