Quen breaks, a ghoul closes from the side, and another sword swing leaves Geralt exposed. Cut the attack string and dodge into open space. That decision is the foundation of a good Feline build: use fast attacks to punish openings, then reposition before the enemy can answer. Light armor supports the aggression, but it gives you less protection when you stay in range too long.
Build around fast-attack damage, critical hits and Adrenaline, with Quen covering mistakes. Start that combat rhythm before you own Cat School equipment, transition into Feline gear when it becomes available, and save prolonged attacks such as Whirl for openings that justify the exposure.

Understand the Remastered 5.0 skill tree first
In Remastered 5.0, every ability has three ranks, including abilities that previously required only a single purchase. Skills also unlock through connected prerequisite skills rather than a required number of points spent anywhere within a branch.
This changes your progression route. When a desired ability is locked, follow its prerequisite connections in the current tree. Spending points on unrelated combat abilities will not substitute for that route. Avoid copying point totals or purchase orders from older Feline guides; the Remastered 5.0 skill-unlock guide explains the progression changes in more detail.
The priorities below describe which abilities to work toward. They do not assume that every skill is immediately reachable or that an older slot layout carries over unchanged.
Early, mid and late-game Feline builds
| Stage | Build priority | Equipment direction | Combat focus |
|---|---|---|---|
| Early game | Fast-attack foundation, dodge support and light-armor synergy | Useful light armor and strong swords; basic Feline armor becomes wearable at level 17 | Short attack strings, Quen protection and counterattacks after dodging |
| Mid game | Whirl access and more reliable Adrenaline generation | Enhanced, Superior or Mastercrafted Feline pieces as available | Build pressure with ordinary attacks; use Whirl against clustered enemies |
| Late game | Rank-three core skills, repeated-attack rewards and rear positioning | Grandmaster Feline equipment | Maintain critical-hit pressure and exploit the set’s attack-based bonuses |
Early game: establish the dodge-and-counter loop
Begin with the accessible fast-attack route. Ordinary sword attacks should provide dependable damage before you commit to advanced abilities. Work toward these supporting skills through their prerequisites:
- Muscle Memory: rewards attacks after a successful dodge or roll, fitting the evade-and-counter rhythm.
- Fleet Footed: improves your protection while dodging, particularly useful before your equipment provides much defensive room.
- Cat School Techniques: connects light armor to fast-attack and critical-hit damage. Pursue it when its prerequisite route becomes accessible.
Keep Quen available while developing this foundation. Its shield gives you a buffer when an attack slips through, but continue ending your attack strings before the opponent’s response. A shielded hit can still leave Geralt badly positioned for the next enemy.
Before the Feline set is ready, use the strongest suitable light armor you can obtain and swords with useful damage, critical-hit or attack bonuses. Do not keep an underpowered sword simply because the eventual build revolves around Witcher equipment.
The early combat pattern is straightforward: protect yourself with Quen, evade an incoming attack, counter with a short fast-attack string, then move again. Aim to reach an enemy’s side or rear rather than repeatedly retreating into another face-to-face exchange.

Cat School gear: when to switch and what can block progress
Basic Feline armor requires level 17. Its light-armor classification suits this build, while its lower protection makes clean dodges more important than they would be in heavier Witcher gear. Start using appropriate pieces as they become available instead of postponing the entire build until you have a complete upgraded set.
The base armor diagrams are in the laboratory beneath Temple Isle in Novigrad. The entrance is concealed by an illusion that requires the Eye of Nehaleni; the laboratory also involves retrieving a key and fighting Mad Kiyan. If the entrance is blocking your progress, check whether you have the Eye before continuing the search.
Use the Feline armor and Grandmaster gear guide for the diagram locations, Temple Isle route and later Toussaint upgrades.
The crafting progression runs through Basic, Enhanced, Superior, Mastercrafted and Grandmaster equipment. Keep the earlier pieces needed for upgrades: every Grandmaster piece requires its Mastercrafted predecessor. Finding a final-tier diagram will not let you skip that crafting requirement.
Mid game: add Whirl and strengthen Adrenaline
Continue raising your main fast-attack abilities toward rank three, then follow the prerequisite path to Whirl. Add Razor Focus for an Adrenaline Point at the start of combat and improved generation, followed by Resolve to reduce Adrenaline loss when Geralt takes damage.
That combination helps preserve offensive momentum when an encounter gets messy. Repeated attacks build pressure, while Resolve limits how much a mistake strips away. It still pays to evade: preserving Adrenaline does not make light armor safe for trading blows.
Whirl gives you an area-damage tool against closely packed drowners, ghouls and similar groups. Look for a cluster you can reach without leaving another enemy behind you, and keep enough stamina available for your defensive needs. Being surrounded creates an opportunity to hit several targets, but also increases the risk of an interrupted attack.
Against one dangerous opponent, keep using ordinary fast attacks in short strings. A prolonged spin gives that enemy more time to retaliate. Use Whirl because the positioning and enemy density suit it, rather than treating it as the replacement for every sword attack.

Late game: complete the rank-three core
The late-game target brings the following abilities to 3/3, following the prerequisite routes shown in the Remastered tree:
- Muscle Memory
- Cat School Techniques
- Fleet Footed
- Whirl
- Razor Focus
- Resolve
- Three Strikes
Three Strikes rewards repeated Fast or Strong Attacks by creating an opportunity to empower subsequent attacks. It fits the sustained pressure this setup already pursues. Keep building that pressure through safe openings rather than extending a string just to reach its reward.
Grandmaster Feline equipment adds set effects tied to fast attacks after strong attacks and increased damage from behind. When those effects are active, work a strong attack into a safe opening before returning to fast attacks, and use repositioning to reach the enemy’s rear. Your main damage pattern remains fast attacks; the strong attack serves the set interaction.
Rear positioning is especially valuable here because it supports the equipment’s offensive effects while helping you avoid prolonged frontal exchanges. Dodge around an attack, punish from the flank or rear, and move again when the enemy turns to face you.
Mutagens, Quen and Death March adjustments
Red mutagens fit the offensive focus. A blue mutagen can support a limited Sign investment if you want more utility from Quen or another Sign. Arrange them around the slots available in your Remastered progression rather than reproducing a 2015 or 2022 layout.
Keep Sign spending focused. Quen addresses this build’s main weakness — the limited defensive margin of Feline armor — without pulling the setup away from its sword-damage route. Add other Sign support where it solves a particular encounter, rather than investing broadly across every Sign branch.
The build is comfortable on Normal and Hard and remains viable on Death March. On Death March, missed dodges and greedy attack strings carry a much higher cost. Prioritize Fleet Footed and dependable Quen use when survivability is the problem; adding another offensive ability will not fix repeated exposed counterattacks.
If stamina is tight, use ordinary fast attacks as your damage source and preserve room to recast Quen. Save Whirl for a clustered group and an opening long enough to use it safely.
