The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered: How to Fix Saves, Audio and DLSS (5.00c)

FinalBoss6 min read
Patch 5.00c fixes PC save/load failures caused by special characters in the Windows Documents path and voice-volume drops after pause-menu navigation. Patch 5.00b restores DLSS on Xbox Play Anywhere PC, so the correct troubleshooting checks depend on where you play.

Fully close and relaunch the game after updating before testing saves, dialogue volume or DLSS. Check the installed version in your launcher or game properties rather than relying on an update download notification or a suspended session. Back up your existing PC saves before running the save/load test.

CD Projekt Red lists 5.00c for all five PC distributions above. If your PC installation is still on 5.00b, update before testing the save-path or voice-volume fixes.

PC: test saving and loading without risking your saves

The save-path defect affects Windows installations where the full Documents folder location contains special characters. Inspect the entire path, including your Windows account name and any parent folders. Characters such as é, ñ, ø or ł can be relevant even when the Documents folder itself has an ordinary name.

  1. Copy your existing Witcher 3 save folder to a separate backup location. Keep that copy untouched while testing.
  2. Launch the updated game and load an existing save. This checks the loading side of the defect before you create another file.
  3. Make a small in-game change and create a manual save in a new slot. Avoid overwriting your only working save.
  4. Return to the title screen and reload the new manual save. Check that the small change is present so you know the new save loaded correctly.

Test both operations: successfully creating a save does not tell you whether loading works. Install 5.00c and retest the existing path before attempting disruptive changes such as relocating Documents or changing your Windows account setup.

If either operation still fails, preserve the backup and stop repeatedly overwriting the same slot. When reporting the problem to CD Projekt Red support, include the PC storefront, installed build, Documents location and whether the failure occurs while saving, loading or both.

PC: test voice volume after using the pause menu

Patch 5.00c fixes voice-over becoming significantly quieter than music and effects after navigating pause-menu tabs. Test that specific trigger before compensating with audio sliders, because changing the mix first can obscure whether the menu-related drop still happens.

  1. Load a dialogue-heavy scene and listen to the balance between voices, music and effects.
  2. Open the pause menu and move through several tabs.
  3. Return to gameplay and compare the dialogue volume with the other audio.
  4. If voices remain quiet, check the in-game voice, master, music and effects sliders, then fully restart the game and repeat the test.

Keep the distinction clear when troubleshooting: voices that start quiet and voices that drop only after menu navigation are different symptoms. Reproduce the menu-triggered behaviour before changing Windows audio settings.

Xbox Play Anywhere PC: check DLSS availability

Patch 5.00b restored DLSS in the Xbox Play Anywhere PC version. Update that installation to 5.00c, then check its graphics settings. The fix concerns the Windows build; owning or playing the Xbox console version does not create a DLSS option on the console.

  1. Update the game and install current NVIDIA graphics drivers.
  2. On compatible NVIDIA hardware, open the graphics settings and check that DLSS is available.
  3. Select your preferred DLSS mode and apply the setting.
  4. Fully restart the game, reopen the graphics settings and check that the selected mode remains active.

Do not diagnose a missing DLSS option as unsupported hardware until the game and NVIDIA drivers are updated. Checking both availability and persistence catches a setting that can be selected but does not remain selected after restarting.

Xbox Series X|S and PS5: test lighting, audio and local saves

Install 5.00b and fully relaunch the game on Xbox Series X|S or PlayStation 5. The update includes interior-lighting adjustments and broader lighting changes. The 5.00c save-path and voice-over fixes described above apply to the listed PC versions; do not use that PC hotfix number as a console requirement.

  • Lighting: revisit an interior that was too dark and assess the same area after updating.
  • Audio: listen to dialogue, navigate several pause-menu tabs, then return to gameplay and check whether voices remain balanced with music and effects.
  • Saves: create a manual save in a separate slot, return to the title screen and reload it on the same console.

Neither console uses the Windows Documents path, so accented folder names are not the applicable diagnosis for a console save failure. If the local save/reload test fails, check available storage and save synchronization while retaining your existing saves.

Xbox Play Anywhere shares saves and achievements between Xbox and Windows PC. Test loading on the device that created the save first, then check the other device separately; this distinguishes a local save/load failure from a cross-device synchronization problem. A missing DLSS setting on Xbox Series X|S or PS5 is expected and requires no fix.
