Let’s be honest: the past year hasn’t been kind to Total War fans. Pharaoh splashed down with underwhelming reviews (Metacritic: 69/100)[1], support dried up faster than a desert campaign, and Creative Assembly (CA) had to rewrite its DLC playbook on the fly. Still, a franchise this storied can’t stay down forever. Enter the Total War 25th Anniversary celebration—an August-to-December run of retrospectives, community events and deep-cut developer videos, all leading to a major December showcase teasing what’s next (including those persistent Star Wars whispers[2]).
Creative Assembly is promising a slate of both historical and fantasy announcements, which matters more now than ever. After Warhammer’s triumphs and Pharaoh’s stumble, CA needs to show it can balance fan-favorite archaeology with fresh territory. That December event isn’t just hype—it’s a turning point.

I’ve been here since Shogun’s feudal clan wars, cheered at Rome’s triumphs and grimaced at Thrones of Britannia. Anniversary events can be nostalgia traps—“Remember when we were great?”—but they can also spark real reinvention. CA’s challenge is twofold: deliver fresh gameplay and reassure die-hards that the core features won’t vanish under microtransaction schemes.
Rumors of a Star Wars Total War are the wild card. Strategy fans recall CA’s aborted Hyenas shooter; now they wonder if the studio can blend galactic spectacle with turn-based tactics without botching the license (see also: EA’s mixed track record). If CA nails it, that IP could reignite interest beyond the historical niche. If not, it’ll feel like chasing trends instead of mastering their craft.
Expect no major releases until at least 2025—that’s industry standard for projects unveiled this late in their cycle. Instead, focus on the showcase’s tone:
With strategy games enjoying a renaissance—thanks to Civilization VI’s ongoing support and Age of Empires IV’s fresh expansions—Total War can’t afford another lukewarm launch. The series needs to show it still leads in grand-scale warfare, sandbox design and modding freedom.
Creative Assembly’s 25th anniversary celebration is more than a marketing fest; it’s a litmus test. Will CA deliver meaningful historical and fantasy entries, and perhaps a bold Star Wars expedition? Or will we get more of the same undercooked DLC and half-baked releases? As a longtime fan, I’m hopeful but wary. Mark December on your calendar, watch for real gameplay and clear roadmaps, and remember that no amount of nostalgia can mask poor design. If CA seizes this moment to innovate—and genuinely listen to players—Total War can reclaim its crown as the grand strategy king.
