Ubisoft Cancels Far Cry’s Extraction Shooter as Kodiak Takes Its Place

Far Cry’s next phase is moving away from an extraction-focused spin-off and back toward the series’ core strength: large, reactive spaces where combat, traversal, and player decisions can create unscripted outcomes. Kodiak is positioned as an open-world FPS rather than a set of repeatable extraction runs, giving Ubisoft a clearer path to build on the sandbox identity that has defined the franchise.

Kodiak replaces Maverick

Ubisoft cancelled Maverick, the Far Cry-universe extraction shooter that had been in development. Its replacement, codenamed Kodiak, is being produced by Vantage Studios and emphasizes player interactions and player-driven stories.

That description points to a game shaped by open-world exploration instead of instanced raids or tightly prescribed match objectives. The important distinction is systemic play: players should be able to approach encounters, movement, and combat through the tools and opportunities they find, rather than follow a single intended solution. That is a better fit for Far Cry’s history of improvised firefights, environmental chaos, and roaming between objectives.

Blackbird remains the nearer mainline project

Kodiak is not replacing Blackbird, the project identified as Far Cry 7 or the next mainline installment. Blackbird is further along in development and includes a cooperative multiplayer mode. The two-game approach separates the main series entry from a second FPS project, rather than asking one release to carry every multiplayer and open-world ambition at once.

For players, that split also sets expectations about priorities. Blackbird is the more immediate Far Cry game to follow, while Kodiak represents a longer-term attempt to expand the formula through emergent stories and social interaction. Neither project has a release date, setting, or confirmed platform list in this roadmap update.
