Upcoming superhero movies? There’s just a few of them!
Superhero movies have been the dominant force at the box office for the last decade, and there are a lot more to come in the near future. ‘Universes’ are all the rage and big hitters like the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel Characters (SPUMC) and Detective Comics Extended Universe (DCEU) all have various projects in development.
With so many superhero movies in our future to look forward to, and the information surrounding them changing all the time, it can be hard to keep up with what’s going on.

Director: Sam Raimi
Dr Strange has had a bit of a wait for a sequel but it could turn out to be one of the most interesting upcoming superhero movies on this list. It is said to have more of a horror element so Raimi seems like a great choice. The Evil Dead is a cult horror favourite and he has superhero experience from the Toby Maguire Spider-man trilogy. Chiwetel Ejiofor will return as Baron Karl Mordo. Elisabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch will feature as the movie ties in with the Disney+ series WandaVision, as well as the Loki series.

Director: Taika Waititi
In Thor: Love and Thunder, Thor will become the first MCU hero to get a fourth solo movie, with Taika Waititi returning to direct after the awesome Ragnarok. Back for this upcoming superhero movie is Natalie Portman as Jane Foster, who will become a female Thor. The movie will also feature Thor’s good friends the Guardians of the Galaxy. Former Batman Christian Bale will play the movie’s villain, Gorr the God Butcher.

Spider-Verse was one of the surprise hits of 2018, adored by critics and the public alike. It broke the Disney/Pixar monopoly to win the Best Animated Film Oscar and almost instantly earned itself a sequel. Production on this upcoming superhero movie began in June 2020 and Shameik Moore (Miles Morales) and Hailee Steinfield (Gwen Stacy) will again voice the main characters, with romance set to bloom between the two. It will also likely lay the groundwork for Spider-Gwen to get her own movie.

Black Adam is one of the archenemies of Shazam and The Rock has been attached to the role since 2014, and at one time was going to be introduced in Shazam! That idea was ditched for a standalone debut with filming due to commence in summer 2020. Noah Centineo has signed up to play a character called Atom Smasher.

RIP Chadwick Boseman.
The role of T’Challa will not be recast so the movie will focus on Wakanda and other characters introduced in the first movie.

Early days for this movie, but Sandberg is set to return to direct, along with stars Zachary Levi and Michelle Borth. Also in the cast is Rachel Ziegler, with Helen Mirren and Lucy Liu signed up to play villainess’.

In August 2020 it was announced that Nia DaCosta would helm this sequel to Captain Marvel. Iman Vellani will play Ms Marvel and Teyonah Parris will play Monica Rambeau, as she did in WandaVision.

Aquaman was beloved by many and is the highest-grossing film in the DCEU, so a sequel was inevitable. Wan will again direct with Jason Mamoa contributing story ideas as well as starring in the title role. Patrick Wilson (Ocean Master) and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Black Manta) will also be back.

Gunn was hired, fired and then rehired for the space misfits third outing. All the main cast returns and events are likely to follow on from those in Thor: Love and Thunder which will also feature the guardians.

All the main names from the first two Ant-Man movies back for a third outing. Reed returns to direct with Paul Rudd, Evangeline Lily, Michael Douglas and Michelle Pfieffer all returning. Kathryn Newman will take over the role of Scott’s, now older, daughter Cassie and Jonathan Majors is Kang The Conqueror.

Barry Allen gets a solo movie with Ezra Miller in the title role. Much like Marvel, DC will start its own multiverse, with Michael Keaton and Ben Affleck both appearing as Batman.

Xolo Mariduena will star in the title role in this upcoming superhero movie as Jaime Reyes who becomes Blue Beetle.
Whilst Marvel has plenty of movies scheduled through 2022 they also have plenty of plans beyond that, albeit without definite release dates…
