Upcoming Superhero Movies: What’s Out When?

Upcoming superhero movies? There’s just a few of them!

Superhero movies have been the dominant force at the box office for the last decade, and there are a lot more to come in the near future. ‘Universes’ are all the rage and big hitters like the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel Characters (SPUMC) and Detective Comics Extended Universe (DCEU) all have various projects in development.

With so many superhero movies in our future to look forward to, and the information surrounding them changing all the time, it can be hard to keep up with what’s going on.

This FinalBoss guide to upcoming superhero movies will be regularly updated with release dates along with cast and crew news.

Updated: 27 December 2020

Upcoming Superhero Movie #1 Morbius (SPUMC)

Date: March 19 2021 Director: Daniel Espinosa

Jared Leto swaps DC for Marvel, going from the Joker to Michael Morbius. Morbius is a man whose attempts to cure his rare blood disease leaves him with a form of vampirism. Matt Smith, Tyrese Gibson and Michael Keaton are all cast in this upcoming superhero movie. Keaton definitely has a thing for superhero stories at the moment!

Upcoming Superhero Movie #2 Black Widow (MCU)

Date: May 7 2021

Director: Cate Shortland

Black Widow finally gets a solo movie! In one of the most anticipated upcoming superhero movies, Scarlet Johansson is joined by Florence Pugh, Rachel Weisz and David Harbour for an MCU prequel. The movie will fill in some of the gaps in Natasha Romanoff’s backstory and is set after Captain America: Civil War.

Upcoming Superhero Movie #3 Venom: Let There Be Carnage (SPUMC)

Date: June 25 2021

Director: Andy Serkis

Serkis steps in to direct the Venom sequel with Tom Hardy and Michelle Williams back to star in this movie. Woody Harrelson will appear as villain Cletus Kasady/Carnage after being teased in the original’s mid-credits scene.

Upcoming Superhero Movie #4 Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (MCU)

Upcoming MCU superhero movie Shang-Chi and the Legend Of The Ten Rings

Date: July 9 2021

Director: Destin Daniel Cretton

Not a lot of info around this which is a surprise considering it’s less than a year away. Simu Liu and Tony Leung will star in Marvel’s first Asian led movie, with Simu Liu playing ‘Master of Kung-Fu’ Shang-Chi.

Upcoming Superhero Movie #5 The Suicide Squad (DC)

Upcoming DC superhero movie stars Margot Robbie and Idris Elba

Date: August 6 2021

Director: James Gunn

Gunn swaps a group of Marvel misfits (the Guardians of the Galaxy) for a DC one. David Ayer’s 2016 Suicide Squad was not well received so it will be interesting to see if Gunn can reinvigorate the franchise in this upcoming superhero movie. Margot Robbie, Viola Davis, Joel Kinnaman and Jai Courtney are back but no Will Smith. Idris Elba, Nathan Fillion and Taika Waititi are among the new big names for this one.

Upcoming Superhero Movie #6 Eternals (MCU)

Upcoming MCU superhero movie stars Kit Harrington and Richard MaddenDate: November 5 2021

Director: Chloe Zhao

The Eternals are an immortal alien race who have secretly been on Earth for thousands of years. Events in Endgame spark them into action as they face off against their enemies, the Deviants. Game Of Thrones ‘brothers’ Richard Madden and Kit Harrington will be reunited for this upcoming superhero movie! Also in the cast are Angelina Jolie, Gemma Chan and Kumail Nanjiani.

Upcoming Superhero Movie #7 Spider-Man 3 (MCU)

Upcoming MCU superhero movie star Tom Holland as Spider-man

Date: December 17 2021

Director: Jon Watts

After some wrangling between Sony and Marvel over rights, it was finally confirmed that Tom Holland will be back for a third solo outing. Presumably this upcoming superhero movie will follow on from Far From Home which ended with Spider-man’s real name being revealed to the world. Jamie Foxx will appear as Electro, a character he played in The Amazing Spider-man 2. Benedict Cumberbatch will appear as Dr Strange, and this movie will likely tie in with Dr Strange 2. There is also unconfirmed speculation that Toby Maguire, Andrew Garfield, Kirsten Dunst and Emma Stone, from previous Spider-man incarnations, will appear.

Upcoming Superhero Movie #8 The Batman (DC)

Upcoming DC superhero movie The Batman's Batmobile

Date: March 4 2022

Director: Matt Reeves

Reeves has great credentials (Cloverfield, Dawn Of and War For The Planet Of The Apes) as he takes the helm for the latest incarnation of Batman. Robert Pattinson fended off competition from Nicholas Hoult for the role, which will see a younger Batman than recent versions and reportedly focus on the detective side of the character. Jeffrey Wright and Andy Serkis will play franchise staples Jim Gordon and Alfred respectively. They’re packing in the villains too with Catwoman (Zoe Kravitz), Riddler (Paul Dano) and Penguin (Colin Farrell).

Upcoming Superhero Movie #9 Dr Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (MCU)

Upcoming MCU superhero movie character Dr Strange

Date: March 25 2022

Director: Sam Raimi

Dr Strange has had a bit of a wait for a sequel but it could turn out to be one of the most interesting upcoming superhero movies on this list. It is said to have more of a horror element so Raimi seems like a great choice. The Evil Dead is a cult horror favourite and he has superhero experience from the Toby Maguire Spider-man trilogy. Chiwetel Ejiofor will return as Baron Karl Mordo. Elisabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch will feature as the movie ties in with the Disney+ series WandaVision, as well as the Loki series.

Upcoming Superhero Movie #10 Thor: Love and Thunder (MCU)

Upcoming MCU superhero movie stars Chris Hemsworth and Natalie Portman

Date: May 6 2022

Director: Taika Waititi

In Thor: Love and Thunder, Thor will become the first MCU hero to get a fourth solo movie, with Taika Waititi returning to direct after the awesome Ragnarok. Back for this upcoming superhero movie is Natalie Portman as Jane Foster, who will become a female Thor. The movie will also feature Thor’s good friends the Guardians of the Galaxy. Former Batman Christian Bale will play the movie’s villain, Gorr the God Butcher.

Upcoming Superhero Movie #11 Black Panther II (MCU)

Upcoming MCU superhero movie character Black Panther

Date: July 8 2022

Director: Ryan Coogler

RIP Chadwick Boseman.

The role of T’Challa will not be recast so the movie will focus on Wakanda and other characters introduced in the first movie.

Upcoming Superhero Movie #12 Spider-Man into the Spider-Verse Sequel

Upcoming Marvel superhero movie characters Miles Morales and Gwen Stacey

Date: October 7 2022

Director: Joaquim Dos Santos

Spider-Verse was one of the surprise hits of 2018, adored by critics and the public alike. It broke the Disney/Pixar monopoly to win the Best Animated Film Oscar and almost instantly earned itself a sequel. Production on this upcoming superhero movie began in June 2020 and Shameik Moore (Miles Morales) and Hailee Steinfield (Gwen Stacy) will again voice the main characters, with romance set to bloom between the two. It will also likely lay the groundwork for Spider-Gwen to get her own movie.

Upcoming Superhero Movie #13 Captain Marvel Sequel (MCU)

Upcoming MCU superhero movie character Captain Marvel

Date: November 11 2022

Director: Nia DaCosta

In August 2020 it was announced that Nia DaCosta would helm this one. Iman Vellani will play Ms Marvel and Teyonah Parris will play Monica Rambeau.

Upcoming Superhero Movie #14 Aquaman 2

Upcoming DC superhero movie character Aquaman

Date: December 16 2022

Director: James Wan

Aquaman was beloved by many and is the highest-grossing film in the DCEU, so a sequel was inevitable. Wan will again direct with Jason Mamoa contributing story ideas as well as starring in the title role. Patrick Wilson (Ocean Master) and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Black Manta) will also be back.

Upcoming Superhero Movie #15 Shazam! 2 (DC)

Upcoming DC superhero movie character Shazam

Date: June 2 2023

Director: David F. Sandberg

Early days for this movie, but Sandberg is set to return to direct, along with stars Zachary Levi and Michelle Borth.

Upcoming Superhero Movie #16 Black Adam (DC)

Upcoming Superhero Movie: Black Adam

Date: ??? (In October 2020 it lost it official date on the DC calendar)

Director: Jaume Collet-Serra

Black Adam is one of the archenemies of Shazam and The Rock has been attached to the role since 2014, and at one time was going to be introduced in Shazam! That idea was ditched for a standalone debut with filming due to commence in summer 2020. Noah Centineo has signed up to play a character called Atom Smasher.

Confirmed but Unscheduled

Whilst Marvel have plenty of movies scheduled through 2022 they also have plenty of plans beyond that, albeit without definite release dates…

  • They have confirmed Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3.
  • Ant-Man will get a third solo movie, subtitled Quantumania. Paul Rudd, Evangeline Lilly, Michael Douglas and Michelle Pfeiffer will be back whilst Kathryn Newton will become the third actress to play Scott’s daughter Cassie. Jonathan Majors has been cast as Kang the Conqueror.
  • Blade will be joining the MCU with Mahershala Ali in the title role.
  • The MCU will also welcome the Fantastic Four, after their last screen outing bombed Marvel will be hoping for better things. Jon Watts, of the most recent Spider-man trilogy, will direct.
  • Ryan Reynold’s will play the wisecracking Deadpool again, with the third movie seeing the character integrated into the MCU.
