Valheim 1.0 launched on September 9, 2026, completing the long Early Access journey with the Deep North endgame biome, new enemies and dungeons, cinematics, achievements, and the game’s ending sequence. Your old world and character still work after the update. The reason to begin again is more specific: a fresh world gives you the most reliable Deep North generation, while achievements only begin tracking from the point you download 1.0.
The practical verdict: start a new world if you have already explored, sailed through, or built around the far north and want the full Deep North experience. Keep your current world if its northern edge remains untouched and preserving your bases matters more than a completely clean map. A new world with your existing character is the strongest middle ground for most returning players.

Why Valheim 1.0 Makes World Age Matter
Valheim worlds are generated from a seed. When your character loads into an area, that terrain is effectively set for that world. This is usually helpful: a shared server stays consistent, explored coastlines do not suddenly move, and a base does not become unrecognizable after an update. The tradeoff is that an already explored northern zone cannot be rebuilt into a fresh Deep North region later.
That is the key 1.0 limitation. New content can be added to an older save, but Deep North terrain and its related features generate correctly only in zones your group has not explored. If you previously took a longship along the top of the map “just to see what was there,” that voyage may have locked in terrain that predates the completed biome.
Iron Gate recommends starting from scratch for the best overall 1.0 experience, but this is a world-generation recommendation rather than a warning that older saves are broken. A pre-1.0 save is still usable. Your buildings, stored supplies, boss progress, portals, map discoveries, and character inventory are not automatically wiped or made unusable.
Choose the Right 1.0 Setup
The right choice depends on the condition of your current map and what you want from your first completed Valheim run. These three routes each solve a different problem.
| Setup | Best for | Deep North result | Main compromise |
|---|---|---|---|
| Keep old world and old character | Groups protecting major bases, portals, farms, and established progression | Works in northern areas that have never been explored | Previously revealed northern terrain will not regenerate into the intended 1.0 biome |
| New world and old character | Veterans who want clean map generation without rebuilding their gear progression from zero | Fresh Deep North generation across the new seed | Your old base network and map discoveries remain on the previous world |
| New world and new character | Players seeking the full restart experience and a natural achievement run | Fresh Deep North generation with a complete progression journey | You rebuild every tool, base, farm, and gear tier |
Keep the old world when the far north is untouched
An existing world remains a sensible choice if your group never revealed its northern boundary. The unexplored Deep North can still generate with the 1.0 content when you finally travel there. This route is especially valuable for long-running co-op worlds where the work invested in a harbor, fortified home, crop fields, portal room, and stored boss materials outweighs the appeal of a full reset.
Be disciplined before heading north. The benefit comes from those zones remaining unexplored. Treat the untouched edge as future content rather than a place to scout casually.
Start a new world when the north is already charted
If the map shows explored ocean, land, or base markers near the northern border, a new seed is the cleanest route. This avoids reaching the final biome through older placeholder terrain and missing parts of the intended Deep North layout, environmental structure, and progression flow.

A fresh map also restores the rhythm that Valheim’s biome progression is built around: gather in the Meadows, advance through the Black Forest and Swamp, prepare for the Mistlands and the Ashlands, then make the Deep North your final destination. That sequence matters more in 1.0 because the journey now leads into a finished endgame rather than stopping at an unfinished northern frontier.
Use an old character on a new world if rebuilding gear is the only concern
World generation and character progression are separate decisions. You do not need a new character merely because you make a new world. Carrying an established character into a fresh seed lets you preserve combat skills, equipment, food access, and materials while ensuring that every part of the new map — including the far north — uses the completed 1.0 generation.
This route is efficient for players who want the Deep North in its intended state but do not want to repeat every early-game resource loop. It is less satisfying if your goal is to replay the entire survival progression with no inherited advantages, since high-tier gear can flatten the danger curve of the early biomes.
Achievements Begin at 1.0 Download Time
Starting a new world does not make Valheim’s achievement tracking begin earlier. Achievement progress starts when you download Valheim 1.0. Everything achieved during Early Access happened before that tracking window, so prior boss kills, crafted items, discoveries, and similar milestones do not automatically fill in after the update.
The easiest example is Eikthyr. A player who defeated Valheim’s first boss many times before 1.0 still needs to defeat Eikthyr again after installing 1.0 for the related achievement to register. The same principle applies broadly: treat the 1.0 download as day one for your achievement progress, regardless of how old your character or world is.
This distinction prevents a common bad assumption. A fresh world is ideal for a clean Deep North map, but it is not required for achievements to start counting. An older, legitimate character can continue earning applicable achievements after 1.0 is installed; it simply does not receive retroactive credit for actions completed before installation.
Cheat-marked characters are a separate problem
Do not overlook character history if achievements are your priority. A character that has used cheats, including during Early Access, is marked and cannot receive the new achievements. Items obtained through cheat commands can trigger the same restriction. Changing worlds does not turn pre-1.0 accomplishment history into achievement credit, and an achievement-focused run should avoid treating console-spawned gear as harmless shortcut equipment.
What a Fresh Run Gives You Beyond Better Terrain
World generation is the hard mechanical reason to restart, but the 1.0 structure gives a full run more value than previous update cycles. Valheim now carries its boss progression through the Deep North and into additional cinematics and an ending sequence. Starting at the Meadows lets that arc unfold in order instead of dropping a fully geared veteran directly into the final biome.

It also gives achievements a cleaner pace. Since post-1.0 actions are what count, a new character and new world naturally re-create the milestones that Early Access veterans already cleared years ago: early boss kills, crafting upgrades, biome discoveries, farming progress, and later-game preparation.
That does mean repeating Valheim’s slower sections. Resource gathering, long boss journeys, and biome preparation remain part of the game’s survival loop. A full restart is best for players who enjoy rebuilding a settlement and progressing through every tier; it is unnecessary busywork for a group whose priority is reaching the completed Deep North with its existing community world intact.
Seed Choice Matters More on a Restart
A new Valheim world is built from a seed, either an automatically generated text string or one entered manually. Seeds are case-sensitive, so a single capital letter can create a completely different map. Every generated map includes boss spawning altars, but the practical distance between your starting area, biomes, resources, and bosses can change the entire pace of a replay.
If you want a calmer reset, seed ABEZMZJZZZ begins on the shore of a giant lake surrounded by Meadows, with channels that lead into the ocean. For a progression-oriented start, Helloworld places a Black Forest near Bonemass, with copper nearby and a Swamp containing multiple crypts for iron. Those are useful examples of why seed planning can reduce repeated travel friction without bypassing the core survival loop.
Warning: seed convenience does not change the Deep North rule. A well-planned new seed is still fresh because its zones have never been loaded, while an old seed with a heavily explored north retains the terrain information it already generated.
Recommended First Session After Installing 1.0
- Check your current map before making a permanent decision, especially the northern ocean and landmass edge.
- Keep an established world if the Deep North remains unrevealed and your group wants to preserve its infrastructure.
- Create a new world if northern exploration is extensive or if you want the most consistent final-biome progression.
- Bring an old character into the new world only when preserving skills and equipment matters more than replaying the entire survival climb.
- Treat achievements as beginning from your 1.0 download, not from the date your original save was created.
- Avoid cheat-marked characters and cheat-generated items on an achievement-focused run.
The Best Choice for Most Returning Vikings
For a fully explored Early Access map, start a new world. That is the dependable way to experience the Deep North as a properly generated final biome and to follow Valheim 1.0’s finished progression toward its new cinematics and ending. Keep your old character if repeating early resource gathering does not appeal to you; make a new character as well if you want every post-1.0 achievement milestone to fit naturally into a complete replay.
For a long-running world with an untouched far north, there is no mandatory wipe. Continue the save, protect those unexplored northern zones until you are ready, and remember that achievement progress begins from 1.0 installation onward. The reset decision is about preserving the best possible Deep North map — not rescuing a save that Valheim 1.0 cannot load.
