Reach Valheim’s Deep North with the Grappling Hook already unlocked, an Ashlands Bloodgold supply running, and a return portal ready for key crafting. The fastest progression route is Mistlands Grappling Hook → Ashlands Ember Charges and Bloodgold → Deep North tunnels for Intricate Key moulds → Frigid Kiln and Frost Foundry → Gates of Mörkhalla. Sailing north first and looking for a completed key is the trap: the Intricate Key is crafted, while the Deep North supplies the one-use mould needed to make it.
The Deep North arrived with Valheim 1.0 on 9 September 2026 as the final cold biome after Ashlands. It is built around vertical fortresses, enemy-filled tunnels, ice cliffs, Frostcores, Bloodgold crafting, and the chained doors of the Gates of Mörkhalla. Treat it as the eighth biome in the intended order rather than an optional detour.

Deep North progression route at a glance
| Route stage | Priority objective | Why it comes first |
|---|---|---|
| Mistlands | Clear Infested Mines, complete the hook unlock chain, and equip a Grappling Hook. | Mörkhalla towers, ice cliffs, pits, and tunnel shafts are designed around vertical movement. |
| Ashlands | Build an Ember Charge loop, defeat Gammeltrolls, and smelt Bloodgold. | Every Cast: Intricate Key needs 5 Bloodgold Ingots before the final key can be made. |
| Deep North surface | Establish a safe landing point, portal route, and ice-gathering loop. | Ice becomes Liquid Frost through the Frigid Kiln, supplying the final key-forging stage. |
| Hidden or Winding Tunnels | Clear rubble piles and fight Elaking and Eyeless One enemies for Mould: Intricate Key. | The mould is the Deep North access item; it is not found as a finished Intricate Key. |
| Main base forge area | Make the key cast at a Level 4 Black Forge, then finish it at the Frost Foundry. | Keeping the Black Forge, Frigid Kiln, and Frost Foundry together cuts repeat sailing trips. |
| Gates of Mörkhalla | Grapple into the upper structure, descend inside, and use a completed Intricate Key at the chained door. | That opens the main Deep North dungeon route and its late-game resource loop. |
Confirm that the world can generate the real Deep North
Valheim does not retro-generate terrain in areas a world has already revealed. A pre-1.0 seed can have the proper Deep North only where its far-north regions remained unexplored before the update. If a long-running world has already been sailed through extensively, it can contain placeholder snow plains instead of the finished biome, its tunnels, and Mörkhalla structures.
For a shared server, check this before the group invests in Bloodgold or starts a northern outpost. A new world, or a world with unexplored northern territory, avoids a progression route that ends at an empty snowfield.
1. Finish Mistlands and unlock the Grappling Hook
The Grappling Hook is the first Deep North unlock to chase even though its progression begins in Mistlands. Its blueprint is found in an Infested Mine, the bug-filled Mistlands dungeon, inside a Dvergr Treasure Chest. Those chests can also hold Black Cores, while Seeker Soldiers provide the Mandibles associated with the hook’s crafting chain.
Bring the hook north because it has unlimited uses and does not lose durability. It handles the parts of the new biome that consume the most time on foot: climbing fortress walls, crossing gaps, reaching high ledges, recovering from tunnel shafts, and collecting Frostcores placed above normal reach.
The exact final crafting station for the Grappling Hook has conflicting 1.0 guidance: published routes place it at a Black Forge, a standard Forge, or a Galdr Table after Mistlands research and The Queen. The reliable preparation is to secure the blueprint, Hook, Mandibles, Yggdrasil Wood, and Refined Eitr, then use the crafting menu available on the character that completed the Mistlands progression chain. Do not dismantle late-game stations until the recipe is visible in that character’s crafting list.
In co-op, hook access is per character rather than a world-wide unlock. A party where only one player has it will repeatedly split at tower walls, pits, and high ledges. Have every regular expedition character complete the Mistlands unlock before the first serious Deep North run.

Use the hook for routing, not risky shortcuts
Keep the Grappling Hook in a quick-access slot before entering a fortress or tunnel. It can latch to walls, towers, and ledges, then pull the character into a hanging position. The standard control sequence fires with left-click, uses the jump input to resume movement while hanging, and releases with right-click. A missed shot over a deep shaft is usually safer than trying to force a jump across icy terrain.
2. Set up the Ashlands Bloodgold and Ember Charge pipeline
The second requirement is Bloodgold. You need 5 Bloodgold Ingots to create each Cast: Intricate Key at a Level 4 Black Forge, so one successful mould drop does not mean a key can be made immediately.
Build the Ember Monument at base after obtaining it from Fader, then collect embers from it for Ember Charges. Ember Charges also require seal pelts from Deep North seals, which makes a first northern scouting trip useful even before the key route is complete.
Gammeltrolls supply the Bloodgold chain. Their petrified tissue is recovered by breaking the petrified remains with Ember Charges, then smelted with coal in a Blast Furnace to produce Bloodgold Ingots. Farm beyond the first five ingots if the group intends to open more than one dungeon. Mould drops are random, and a key-making run can stall if every Bloodgold bar was spent on a single cast.
- Before sailing north: have a working Blast Furnace, coal, Ember Charges, and at least 5 Bloodgold Ingots set aside per planned key.
- Before entering tunnels: leave inventory space for moulds, Frostcores, ice, and dungeon materials.
- For co-op: decide whether one base player will handle forging or whether every expedition player will carry enough materials for a separate key.
3. Establish a Deep North ice and tunnel route
Land, place a portal route, and begin with the outer settlements and fortress shells instead of charging straight toward a chained Mörkhalla door. The Deep North has slippery ice, harsh vertical terrain, and hidden tunnels filled with enemies. Ice is gathered with a black metal pickaxe, but standing on the ice can make movement slide; avoid mining near cliff edges or open shafts unless there is a stable retreat path.
The key material comes from Winding Tunnels, also called Hidden Tunnels. Their entrances are commonly beneath the largest hall in a settlement, with access through rubble, interior pits, or lower passages. These tunnels contain Frostcores, upgrade materials, enemy packs, and piles of rubbish that can yield Mould: Intricate Key.
Elaking and Eyeless One enemies have a better chance of dropping the mould than ordinary rubbish piles, but there is no published percentage and no guaranteed drop per tunnel. Clear the full route rather than leaving elevated side paths unexplored. The Grappling Hook pays off here because it reaches overhead Frostcores and lets the party move through vertical shafts without repeatedly rebuilding ladders or taking long stair routes.
What to bring back from a tunnel run
- Mould: Intricate Key: the single-use component for an Intricate Key cast.
- Frostcores: fuel the cold-crafting side of Deep North progression.
- Ice: turns into Liquid Frost through the Frigid Kiln.
- Deep North seal pelts: support the Ember Charge loop needed for further Bloodgold work.
- Late-game materials: retain Bloodgold, Nord Steel, and Ice Core-related drops rather than filling inventory with lower-tier loot.
4. Craft the Intricate Key through the mould-and-cast chain
The finished Intricate Key comes from three connected stations. The mould is collected in the Deep North, the cast is made at the Black Forge, and the finished key is produced at the Frost Foundry with Liquid Frost. Each Mould: Intricate Key can only be used once, so treat a mould drop as one key attempt rather than a reusable recipe unlock.

| Crafting stage | Station or source | Required result |
|---|---|---|
| Find the mould | Hidden or Winding Tunnels in Deep North settlements | Collect Mould: Intricate Key from rubble or enemy drops. |
| Create the cast | Level 4 Black Forge | Combine 1 Mould: Intricate Key with 5 Bloodgold Ingots to make Cast: Intricate Key. |
| Create Liquid Frost | Frigid Kiln | Process Deep North ice into the Liquid Frost used by the Frost Foundry. |
| Finish the key | Frost Foundry | Use Liquid Frost with Cast: Intricate Key to make the Intricate Key. |
The Frigid Kiln itself requires 10 Frostcore, 20 Stone, and 5 Ice. Build it beside the Frost Foundry and Black Forge rather than at a remote northern camp. Once the cast and Liquid Frost are ready, the Frost Foundry finishes the key in about one minute. Keeping all three stations at the main base turns a successful tunnel haul into a quick resupply stop instead of a long crafting detour.
Carry the completed key in character inventory before returning to Mörkhalla. Deep North guidance treats Intricate Keys as consumed when used at locked doors, and the total number of key doors in a world seed is not fixed publicly. Farming multiple moulds and preparing multiple 5-ingot Bloodgold sets is the safer route for a long expedition.
5. Enter the Gates of Mörkhalla from above
The Gates of Mörkhalla do not provide a simple ground-level entrance. Approach the fortress as a vertical traversal problem: use the Grappling Hook on exterior walls, towers, and high ledges to reach the upper section, then work downward through internal staircases and pits. The enormous chained door is deeper inside, not at the first wall you reach.
Use the Intricate Key at the locked ornate gate when the interaction becomes available. Opening it advances the dungeon route and gives access to the deeper Deep North material loop that supports Nord Steel, Bloodgold, Ice Core-related progression, upgraded gear, and preparation for the biome’s final boss path.
Do not spend the first completed key on an unprepared scouting run. Mörkhalla is more efficient when the group has enough healing, cold-ready food, a portal fallback, inventory capacity, and at least one spare crafting batch waiting at base. A bad tunnel mould streak is manageable; a bad streak after the only Bloodgold stock was consumed creates unnecessary backtracking through Ashlands.
Common Deep North progression stalls
- No Intricate Key in a tunnel: keep clearing rubbish piles and prioritize Elaking and Eyeless One encounters. Mould drops are not guaranteed.
- Cast recipe is visible but the key cannot be finished: gather Deep North ice, convert it at the Frigid Kiln, and feed the resulting Liquid Frost into the Frost Foundry.
- A mould was found but there is no Bloodgold: return to the Gammeltroll and Blast Furnace loop. One cast requires 5 Bloodgold Ingots.
- The party cannot reach a Mörkhalla ledge: the missing player needs their own Mistlands Grappling Hook unlock. A teammate’s hook does not grant shared traversal.
- The far north is only empty snow terrain: use unexplored northern territory or move Deep North progression to a new 1.0-capable world.
- Ice mining keeps causing falls: mine away from exposed edges, because ice surfaces can slide underfoot and a short extraction route is safer than a large open pit.
Best order for repeat Mörkhalla runs
Once the first tunnel route is known, run Deep North progression in batches: clear tunnels for several moulds and Frostcores, return through the portal, create multiple casts with stockpiled Bloodgold, process enough ice into Liquid Frost, then bring several completed keys back to the north. That order keeps the Grappling Hook, Bloodgold pipeline, Frigid Kiln, and Frost Foundry working together instead of turning every locked door into a separate cross-biome errand.
The route ends where Deep North progression should begin in earnest: a fully mobile group, a repeatable key supply, and access through the Gates of Mörkhalla.
