Valheim: Deep North Progression – Grappling Hook, Intricate Key, Bloodgold

FinalBoss8 min read

The reliable Deep North progression route is Grappling Hook access → Winding Tunnels → Mould: Intricate Key → Bloodgold farming → Intricate Key crafting. Prepare the hook and Ember Charge supply before committing to locked Deep North routes, because the key requires Bloodgold and each Mould: Intricate Key supports only one cast.

Valheim 1.0 added the Deep North on September 9, 2026, bringing a late-game biome built around harsh vertical terrain, snow-clearing areas, new creatures, and an equipment chain that feeds directly into its locked structures. The full release also added more than 40 weapons, new armor and tools, over 80 buildable pieces, and several new crafting stations. For Deep North progression, the important stations are the Black Forge, Frigid Kiln, Frost Foundry, and Blast Furnace.

The important planning point is that Bloodgold is the resource bottleneck. A tunnel run can give you the mould early, but the mould does nothing until you have killed Gammeltrolls, converted their petrified remains into Petrified Tissue, and smelted that tissue into Bloodgold Ingots.

Get the Grappling Hook before pushing Deep North heights

The Grappling Hook is a Mistlands-tier Black Forge craft that becomes especially valuable in the Deep North. It crosses height gaps and steep elevation without forcing you to build long bridges over hostile terrain. It also provides a direct solo route toward elevated structures and entrances around the Gates of Mörkhalla, where a group might otherwise use a catapult.

Start by opening a Dvergr Treasure Chest in the Infested Mines to obtain the component named Hook. That item is separate from the finished Grappling Hook. At a Black Forge, craft the completed tool with these materials:

  • 1 Hook
  • 10 Yggdrasil Wood
  • 10 Refined Eitr
  • 4 Mandibles from Seeker Soldiers

The finished Grappling Hook has unlimited use. It consumes no durability and has no per-throw resource cost, so use it freely when a ridge, ravine, or raised approach would otherwise turn into a slow building project. The benefit is consistency: a hook route remains available after a retreat, while temporary terrain solutions can become awkward to rebuild in the Deep North’s uneven snowbound ground.

Keep the hook on your active bar before searching settlements. Tunnel entrances can sit inside elevated or awkwardly approached structures, and the biggest hall in a snow-covered village is the most likely place to find the route underground.

Search Winding Tunnels for Mould: Intricate Key

The Intricate Key begins in Deep North settlements, not at the gate itself. Enter the tunnels beneath snow-covered villages and search the rubble after clearing the enemies inside. Mould: Intricate Key can drop from tunnel enemies and can also be found in rubble piles. Frostcores are part of these underground routes as well, making a thorough dungeon sweep more useful than rushing through the first rooms.

Focus your search on the largest hall in each settlement. Its interior normally contains the tunnel entrance, and that route is where the key chain starts. Treat every mould as a consumed crafting item: one Mould: Intricate Key creates one Cast: Intricate Key, so it cannot cover repeated key production by itself.

Deep North progression eventually calls for three Intricate Keys. Collect moulds with that number in mind instead of leaving the tunnels after the first find. Returning later for another mould creates extra travel, and the later Bloodgold farm is easier to manage when you already know how many casts you need.

Turn a mould and Bloodgold into an Intricate Key

The crafting chain has three distinct stages. The Black Forge creates the cast, the Frigid Kiln produces Liquid Frost from ice, and the Frost Foundry finishes the key. Build and stock these stations before carrying your Bloodgold home so the resource run immediately becomes door access.

  1. Use 5 Bloodgold and 1 Mould: Intricate Key at the Black Forge to make Cast: Intricate Key.
  2. Mine ice in the Deep North with a black metal pickaxe, then process it in the Frigid Kiln to make Liquid Frost.
  3. Place the Cast: Intricate Key in the Frost Foundry and feed the foundry Liquid Frost to produce the finished Intricate Key.

Ice deposits can be slippery underfoot, so mine from a stable position rather than sprinting across the surface while carrying a full load. The final foundry process is short enough to wait beside the station, though the exact completion time can vary between a few seconds and roughly a minute. Keep your Liquid Frost supply ready before placing the cast in the Frost Foundry.

The Intricate Key is required for locked Deep North doors, including the Gates of Mörkhalla. Carry the finished key before making a long hook-assisted approach to one of these structures; the route has no alternate interaction that substitutes for the crafted key.

Farm Bloodgold through Petrified Gammeltrolls

Gammeltrolls provide the Bloodgold side of the loop. After you defeat one, its huge body turns into a stone statue called a Petrified Gammeltroll. That statue is a resource node created by combat, and its harvesting method is Ember Charges rather than a conventional pickaxe.

Set up Ember Charge production before farming. Embers come from an Ember Monument at your base, while seal pelts come from seals in the Deep North. Combine embers and seal pelts to craft Ember Charges, then carry a surplus when you head out to hunt Gammeltrolls.

  1. Defeat a Gammeltroll and allow its body to become a Petrified Gammeltroll.
  2. Move close to the statue’s ankles.
  3. Throw one Ember Charge at each ankle from point-blank range.
  4. Collect the Petrified Tissue once the statue collapses.
  5. Transport the tissue to a Blast Furnace and smelt it into Bloodgold Ingots.

Two Ember Charges — one on each ankle — destroy the petrified body. Save your pickaxe for ice and other mineable deposits; Petrified Gammeltrolls do not break through ordinary pickaxe mining. This distinction is the main reason Deep North expeditions stall: killing the troll is only half of the Bloodgold process if you arrived without charges.

Petrified Tissue is heavy and cannot travel through wooden portals. Use a stone portal for the return route, or plan a physical haul to your Blast Furnace. A base with an Ember Monument, stone portal access, and a Blast Furnace keeps the resource loop compact and prevents tissue from piling up at a distant hunting ground.

Bloodgold yields and Gammeltroll drop patterns do not provide a fixed “one troll equals one key” calculation. Continue the loop until you have the 5 Bloodgold needed for each planned cast, then smelt a reserve batch before returning to the tunnels for more moulds.

Keep the key-production loop ready

A clean Deep North setup separates exploration supplies from production supplies. Carry the Grappling Hook for terrain, Ember Charges for petrified statues, and enough free inventory weight for Petrified Tissue. At base, keep the Black Forge, Frigid Kiln, Frost Foundry, and Blast Furnace ready so each resource return progresses immediately into the next stage.

  • Keep the Grappling Hook equipped whenever you are moving between Deep North settlements and elevated structures.
  • Save every Mould: Intricate Key until you have the Bloodgold to turn it into a cast.
  • Farm seals alongside Gammeltrolls so Ember Charge crafting does not become the next bottleneck.
  • Use stone portal logistics for Petrified Tissue, then process it promptly at the Blast Furnace.
  • Bank Bloodgold in groups of five, matching the Black Forge cost of each Cast: Intricate Key.

Once you have three finished Intricate Keys and a reserve of Ember Charges, the Deep North route becomes far less stop-start: hook through the terrain, clear the next tunnel, recover another mould, and refill Bloodgold before the next locked door.
