Valheim: Get Grappling Hook, Intricate Key, and Bloodgold Fast

FinalBoss7 min read

The efficient Deep North order is simple: arrive with the Grappling Hook, secure Intricate Key moulds from Winding Tunnels, then turn petrified Gammeltrolls into Bloodgold for your keys. The trap is treating a petrified troll like a normal ore node — pickaxes do nothing to it, and every wasted trip for Ember Charges or Seal Pelts slows the entire dungeon route.

Deep North is Valheim 1.0’s late-game frozen tundra, built around vertical structures, slippery ice, locked ornate doors, and the Bloodgold progression loop. Clear Mistlands and Ashlands progression before committing to a serious expedition: The Queen unlocks the Mistlands crafting path for the Grappling Hook, while Fader provides the Ember Monument needed to generate Embers for Gammeltroll mining.

Table of Contents (6)

Bring These Before You Farm Deep North Key Items

  • Grappling Hook: A permanent mobility tool with unlimited uses, no durability loss, and no per-shot resource cost.
  • Ember Monument: Built from Fader’s Ashlands boss drop; it generates the Embers required for Ember Charges.
  • Workbench: Needed to craft Ember Charges.
  • Blast Furnace and Coal: Petrified Tissue becomes Bloodgold here, taking roughly 30 seconds per batch.
  • Level 4 Black Forge: Required to make Cast: Intricate Key.
  • Frost Foundry and Frigid Kiln: The foundry finishes the key using Liquid Frost. The Frigid Kiln costs 10 Frostcore, 20 Stone, and 5 Ice to build; gather extra Ice because it also fuels the kiln.
  • Stone Portal access: Petrified Tissue is extremely heavy and only travels through stone portals, not wooden ones.

That station setup matters more than another combat detour. You can kill a Gammeltroll in the field, but the reward remains dead weight until you can send it home through a stone portal and process it into Bloodgold.

Get the Grappling Hook Before Exploring Gates of Mörkhalla

The Grappling Hook comes from Mistlands progression rather than Deep North loot. Complete The Queen, unlock the relevant Mistlands crafting research, and use the Galdr Table path before heading north. A Hook component can be found in Dvergr Treasure Chests inside Infested Mines, while Mandibles come from Seeker Soldiers and Refined Eitr comes from the Eitr Refinery through Sap and Soft Tissue.

Launch-era item information differs on the Grappling Hook’s exact crafting station and full material quantities. The dependable preparation is to complete The Queen, unlock the Galdr Table research, and gather the Hook, Mandibles, Yggdrasil Wood, and Refined Eitr before sailing to Deep North. Check the in-game recipe after the research unlock instead of planning an expedition around a disputed ingredient count.

Use the Hook as a traversal tool, not a panic button during every fight. Load the hook with left-click, reel yourself in with Space, and release with right-click. It lets you climb cliffs and cross gaps that would otherwise force long detours over ice, where your character slides and loses clean footing.

Its biggest Deep North use is reaching elevated access points. Gates of Mörkhalla and other tall structures are designed around entering from above, while Abandoned Homesteads often reward using the Hook to reach upper platforms and avoid ground-level pathing through enemies and snow.

Find Intricate Key Moulds in Winding Tunnels

An Intricate Key is crafted, never looted as a completed item. Start at an Abandoned Homestead and check the back of its largest building for the entrance to the Winding Tunnels. Search tunnel rubble and defeat enemies inside; both can supply Mould: Intricate Key.

Do not leave after finding a single mould if you are pushing Deep North progression. Each mould is consumed when used, and you eventually need three Intricate Keys. That means planning for three moulds and 15 Bloodgold Ingots total, since each key cast costs five Bloodgold Ingots.

The first tunnel is not guaranteed to contain a mould. If its loot tables come up empty, keep checking other Abandoned Homesteads and Winding Tunnels. Additional moulds can also appear in Deep North locked-structure routes, but the homestead tunnel search is the reliable place to begin.

Farm Petrified Gammeltrolls Efficiently

Gammeltrolls are the core Bloodgold resource loop. Kill one in the Deep North and its body petrifies into a huge stone statue. The statue does not despawn like an ordinary corpse, but it also cannot be mined with even your strongest pickaxe. You need Ember Charges.

Craft 10 Ember Charges at a Workbench from 2 Seal Pelts and 1 Ember. Seal Pelts are therefore a hard limit on how quickly you can farm Bloodgold: hunt seals as you travel between homesteads and tunnels rather than waiting until your Ember supply is ready.

  • Defeat the Gammeltroll and wait for its corpse to solidify.
  • Move close to the statue’s ankles or lower legs.
  • Throw Ember Charges at the legs, then retreat before the blast.
  • Break both legs to collapse the entire statue into rubble.
  • Collect the dropped Petrified Tissue and move it through a stone portal.

Targeting the ankles is the charge-saving play. One or two volleys aimed at both legs can bring down the full statue, while repeatedly blasting its torso wastes charges and keeps you in the explosion radius. The ice underfoot makes that retreat less forgiving, so leave yourself a clear run line before throwing.

You may also find petrified or partially buried Gammeltrolls while exploring tundra around major structures. Those are immediate mining opportunities: bring charges to them instead of assuming every Bloodgold run requires another full Gammeltroll fight.

Turn Petrified Tissue Into an Intricate Key

At base, place Petrified Tissue and Coal into a Blast Furnace to produce Bloodgold Ingots. Each smelt takes about 30 seconds, so keep Coal ready before unloading a large Tissue haul. The refined Bloodgold feeds both the key pipeline and Deep North’s advanced weapons and gear.

Liquid Frost comes from feeding Ice into the Frigid Kiln, then using its output in the Frost Foundry. Once the cast and Liquid Frost are in place, the foundry completes the finished Intricate Key after a short processing period.

Use the completed key on ornate locked doors in Gates of Mörkhalla and other Deep North locks. Keep the Grappling Hook on your hotbar for this stage: key doors may be below a top entrance, and the intended route often starts by grappling onto the structure rather than forcing a ground-level approach.

Deep North Problems That Waste the Most Time

  • Bringing a pickaxe instead of Ember Charges: Petrified Gammeltrolls require explosives. Pickaxe upgrades do not change that.
  • Ignoring Seal Pelts: No Seal Pelts means no Ember Charges, which means no Petrified Tissue and no Bloodgold.
  • Making one key mould do all the work: Moulds are single-use. Collect extras whenever a Winding Tunnel provides them.
  • Arriving without a stone portal route: Petrified Tissue cannot use a wooden portal, so plan a stone-connected base or transport chain.
  • Forgetting Black Forge upgrades: The Intricate Key cast needs a Level 4 Black Forge, making an under-upgraded forge a complete progression stop.
  • Walking every approach: Ice causes sliding, and the Hook bypasses long cliff routes, upper ledges, and several awkward Deep North entrances.

The repeatable loop is Gammeltroll kill, Ember Charge collapse, Petrified Tissue, Bloodgold, then another Intricate Key cast. Once your stone portal, Coal supply, Seal Pelt stockpile, and Frost Foundry are all running, Deep North progression becomes a resource route instead of a sequence of return trips.
