Wardogs Queue and Server Outage: What Steam Players Should Do Now

ethan Smith3 min read
Wardogs’ Steam launch was disrupted by login queues and server downtime after more than 300,000 players arrived, with Bulkhead restoring access through client updates and controlled entry waves.

This was not a normal long queue. Bulkhead temporarily removed all players from WARDOGS, restarted its servers and required the latest Steam client update before reopening access in controlled batches. Repeated login attempts during that process could place players back at the rear of the queue without accelerating entry.

The disruption followed exceptional demand for Bulkhead’s 100-player FPS, published by Team17. Steam reached roughly 330,000 concurrent WARDOGS players on its first day, while more than 100,000 users were waiting in queues at points during the launch period. Players also encountered matchmaking failures and the “Join Timed Out” message, error code 1628505091.

Bulkhead identified Valve free API rate limiting as part of the bottleneck. That API verifies game ownership, creating a processing constraint when the service receives a launch-scale flood of logins. The studio said the queue itself was not specifically broken, but that it was working with Valve to raise the applicable limit toward the capacity used by larger Steam releases. The precise contribution of that limit relative to other server-side pressure has not been detailed.

The recovery procedure was explicit: close WARDOGS if prompted, install the Steam update, relaunch the game and remain in the server queue while admissions are active. Bulkhead’s hotfix took servers offline at 5:20 AM Japan time, then began phased reconnections. By 8:57 AM Japan time, it said the login queue had reached zero, roughly eight hours after the launch window began.

A moving queue indicates that backend capacity is available but full; a forced restart or universal connection failure is server-side downtime and cannot be fixed through local troubleshooting. The earlier closed beta had already exposed login-queue and scaling pressure, but Bulkhead said this particular issue had not appeared in that test.

Watch Bulkhead’s official service updates for the next restart, client patch or admission-wave notice before retrying a stalled login.
