The Mage’s new 16-point talent milestone requires 16 talent points, not character level 16. For Shamans, an equally important trap is keeping macros that treat Windfury and Flametongue Totems as weapon enchantments: both now provide party buffs. Those are the first assumptions to fix when adapting a Classic setup.
This checklist covers the World of Warcraft: Forever beta. Keep your launch talent allocation separate: the beta changes do not establish which rules will carry into release.

Mage: rebuild the talent path before choosing a rotation
Talents begin at level 10, with milestones at 11, 16, 21 and 31 points. Account for the additional 16-point milestone when planning your route through a tree. Talent resets require a class trainer in a major city, so reviewing the whole path before reallocating points saves a return trip.
Wand Specialization now delivers its full benefit for two points. A copied Classic allocation can therefore reserve more points than the talent needs. Decide where those freed points belong after checking the revised milestones, rather than preserving the old allocation around familiar talent names.
| Specialization | Beta change | What to recheck |
|---|---|---|
| Arcane | Arcane Focus increases Arcane spell hit chance. Improved Channeling replaces Improved Arcane Missiles and also protects Arcane Blast from damage-induced casting interruption. | Recalculate hit assumptions for your Arcane spells. Evaluate interruption protection in solo combat and PvP, where incoming damage can disrupt casting. |
| Fire | Beta tuning changes Hot Streak terminology to Heating Up and uses a three-charge Combustion model. | Match proc alerts and cooldown tracking to the current tooltip. Do not preserve an old trigger sequence solely because the talent occupies a familiar position. |
| Frost | Level-40 Frostfire Bolt counts as both a Fire and Frost spell. | Read the relevant damage, control and critical-strike talent tooltips before including it in a Frost-heavy or hybrid setup. |
Arcane Focus’s hit benefit is specifically for Arcane spells. Do not apply that benefit across every spell in a hybrid build. Likewise, Improved Channeling addresses casting disruption caused by damage; it does not justify treating Arcane Blast as immune to every form of interruption.
At level 40, add Frostfire Bolt to your spell and action-bar planning. Its dual-school classification makes both Fire and Frost talent interactions relevant, but it does not establish that every bonus from both trees stacks. Check individual interactions before replacing an existing spell or committing points to a hybrid.

Shaman: build around faster placement, recall and movement
Totems use a 1.0-second global cooldown instead of 1.5 seconds, while buff-granting totems last five minutes instead of two. That reduces setup disruption and refresh frequency. Position still matters: a long-duration totem can remain active after the fight has moved away from it.
| Level | Ability | Preparation priority |
|---|---|---|
| 12 | Fire Nova | Replaces Fire Nova Totem. It detonates around your active Fire totem and has a 10-second cooldown. |
| 20 | Totemic Recall | Destroys all active totems and returns 25% of their mana cost. Keep it accessible for abandoning a setup. |
| 20 | Call of the Elements | Places up to four totems from the Totem Bar in one cast. |
| 22 | Totemic Projection | Moves all active totems to a new location within 30 yards. |
| 30 and 40 | Call of the Ancestors / Call of the Spirits | Each provides another four-totem preset, allowing distinct setups without editing the same selection repeatedly. |
Use the Call presets for distinct jobs, such as your normal damage setup and a resistance assignment. Resistance totems now cover the raid, making their allocation relevant beyond your immediate party.
Keep Recall and Projection on separate, clearly distinguishable binds. Recall removes the entire setup for a partial mana refund; Projection preserves it and changes its location. When a fight moves within Projection’s 30-yard range, relocating the active set avoids rebuilding it.
For Fire Nova, track the active Fire totem’s position alongside the spell’s cooldown. Repeated casts detonate around that totem, so an outdated placement can spoil the intended area damage even when Fire Nova is ready.
Separate party totem buffs from personal weapon imbues
Windfury and Flametongue Totems no longer enchant weapons. Review group assignments and personal weapon imbues separately, especially on an Enhancement alt.

- Windfury and Flametongue do not stack with each other. Choose the intended party buff instead of assigning both as simultaneous benefits.
- Windfury does not stack with Grace of Air. Account for that conflict when another Shaman shares the assignment.
- A matching personal weapon imbue prevents the Shaman from benefiting from the corresponding party totem. Do not count both effects when evaluating your own setup.
- Tranquil Air Totem is removed. Clear it from saved Call presets, action bars and macros.
Old weapon-enchant macros need particular attention: their underlying assumption no longer matches these party buffs. A visible tracker for active totems and their five-minute duration also helps distinguish an expired buff from a setup that needs relocation.
Recheck talent costs and damage assumptions on both alts
For Shamans, Two-Handed Axes and Maces, Weapon Mastery and Improved Weapon Totems move to baseline abilities. Remove their old talent costs from your planning before deciding how much room remains for deeper investments.
Critical hit rating applies to spells as well as melee attacks, but spell-damage coefficients also change. Casters need additional spell damage to reach damage values from other Classic versions; Shamans are particularly affected, with talents able to offset part of the difference. A Lightning Bolt rank adjustment alone cannot describe the performance of the complete build.
When using spell-damage breakpoint figures, retain their assumptions: level 60, no talents included, and full duration for damage-over-time spells. They do not directly describe a leveling alt or a talented rotation. Before spending gold on a reset, reconcile the calculator’s available points with your character’s level and the talent tree currently in the beta.
