Why the Canyon Stratum Bananas Are So Easy to Miss
After spending way too many hours stuck at 59/60 Banandium Crystals in Donkey Kong Bananza’s Canyon Stratum, I finally sat down and cleaned the whole zone properly. The breakthrough came when I realised how many crystals are tucked into sub-strata 301 and 302, behind paid Constructon walls, or locked behind post-game conditions.
This guide walks you through every Canyon-related crystal the game lists, from “Welcome to the Canyon!” all the way to “Helmet Collection”, including:
The main Canyon hub (Strate 300)
The refinery / laser sub-stratum (301)
The tiny post-game bonus layer (302)
I’ll follow the in-game names (translated from French) so you can match this with your crystal list. If you’re sitting at 98-100% and can’t spot what’s missing, there’s a very good chance it’s one of the ones I call out as “easy to miss” below.
Before You Start Your Canyon Cleanup
You can grab a lot of these on your first visit, but in my experience it’s far smoother to come back later with the zone and key powers unlocked. Here’s what I recommend having before you do a full sweep:
Main story for Canyon done: beat the Canyon bosses (Grumpy Kong and Mixo-dingo) so all portals and mechanisms are available.
Bananza Kong form unlocked:
Drill / digging ability:
Downward punch move:jump → attack in mid-air, crucial for “Submerged Treasure” and some Time Smash trials.
Enough gold:3,000-4,000 gold for Constructon clearings, the Pouston tree and the Trocton trade.
Post-game access:
Once you’re geared up, start from Strate 300 (main Canyon) and we’ll work our way through, then drop down to 301 and 302.
Main Canyon Hub – Strate 300 Bananas
Canyon Entrance & Cliffside (01–07, 22)
The very first batch is clustered around the entrance cliffs. Don’t rush forward like I did the first time or you’ll miss half of them.
Screenshot from Donkey Kong Bananza
01 – “Welcome to the Canyon!” A group of crystals is right in front of you as you enter. Just walk forward and grab them.
02 – “Behind the Degrincol Cliffs” Before going ahead, turn around and dig into the dirt behind your spawn point to uncover this one behind the cliff.
03 – “Hanging Inside the Cliff” In the same cliff area, look for climbable handholds. Climb up, then use a jump + mid-air roll to reach the banana stuck to the ceiling.
04 – “Chimney Panorama” Climb the large chimney structure nearby; the crystal is on top with a nice view of the canyon.
05 – “Time Smash: Cliff Valley” Above the cliff, activate the triangular Time Smash mechanism. You just need to follow the glowing trail and smash all targets before the timer ends. No tricky routes here, just don’t miss any turns.
06 – “Sprout in the Rock Wall” Still on the cliff top, look for a crystal jammed into the rock. It’s at the marked spot; punch the wall or dig to pop it out.
07 – “Buried in the Cliffs” There’s a hidden room roughly under the minecart track. Look for a suspicious wall and dig or punch through to find this tucked-away crystal.
22 – “On the Other Side of the Cliff” From the cliff edge, dive toward the blue block floating a bit off the side. Land on it and you’ll uncover another secret room with a crystal inside.
Common mistake: I used to leave the cliffs too early and never came back, which is how I ended up missing 02 and 07. Finish this whole area before moving toward the village.
Village & Warehouse Area (08–15, 19–21, 23, 27–29, 35)
Once you reach the village, you get a dense cluster of crystals in houses, basements and the nearby water.
08 – “Intact Treasure” When you first arrive, enter the house on your right. The crystal is inside.
13 – “Welcome to the Village!” This one is obvious: right by the teleporter in the village centre.
14 – “Ceiling of the Soussabot Warehouse” Inside the warehouse, climb the walls and use a wall jump into an air roll to reach the crystal hanging from the ceiling. I failed this jump a dozen times-angle your wall jump slightly outwards to give your roll more horizontal distance.
15 – “Submerged Treasure” Dive into the water nearby. The crystal is stuck underwater and you must use a downward punch (jump → attack) three times to break it free.
19 – “Underground Guide” Next to “Submerged Treasure”, follow the small blue creature as it digs a tunnel. When it gets tired and stops, dig a bit further along its path to reveal the hidden crystal.
20 & 21 – “Fragmenton Patched / Rebuilt – Canyon” Near a metal grating, you’ll find Fragmenton’s pieces buried. Dig around to form a path to the main body. Reunite the first chunk for 20, then continue around to bring the smaller fragments back for 21.
23 – “Preserved Treasure” In one of the village houses, take the stairs down to the basement to grab this crystal.
27 – “A Glow in the Secret Stash” Another hidden room off the village; check walls behind props and dig through weak stone (your map hint helps here).
28 – “Crystal in the House” Similar deal: a secret room inside a house, accessed through a suspicious wall or floor panel.
29 – “Cleared Minecart” Once you’ve destroyed the local Void mechanism, the minecart blockage disappears and this crystal becomes reachable on the track.
35 – “Canyon Stats” Talk to Statistiton in the village after you’ve destroyed around 30,000 m³ of stone. If he keeps repeating his old line, you haven’t broken enough rock yet.
Tip: If you’re only missing one from the village cluster, it’s almost always 27 or 28-both are in hidden rooms the mini-map only barely hints at, so hug the walls and listen for the “secret room” sound cue.
The portals around the canyon give you several combat and traversal crystals. This is where the game starts mixing platforming, explosives and time limits.
Screenshot from Donkey Kong Bananza
11 – “Combat: Explosive Swine Squadron” Take the portal and defeat the bomb-throwing pigs. Stay mobile and use ranged attacks if you have them; the reward crystal appears once all are down.
16, 17, 18 – “Minefield” set Another portal takes you into a minefield.
16 – “In a Minefield” The first crystal is along the main path; throw projectiles at the mines to blow up the brambles.
17 – “Secret Blasted Room” Just before the end, turn around and look for a hidden bramble wall. Destroy it, then use a rock chunk plus air roll to reach the crystal inside.
18 – “Explosive Exploration” At the very end, destroy the final bramble wall to reveal the last crystal.
30 – “Great Wheel Balloons” Once you board the minecart and approach the giant wheel, a portal to your left starts a challenge: pop 5 balloons within the time limit to earn this crystal. Aim ahead of moving balloons; you don’t have time to chase mistakes.
31 – “Great Wheel Basement” Ride to the top of the wheel, then drop off the back side and slide down the wall to reach the basement area with this crystal.
32 – “Behind the Great Wheel” Repeat the back-side drop, but this time grab onto the metal grating as you fall to enter a secret room behind the wheel.
33 – “Time Smash: Cliff Edge” Activate the mechanism near the cliff and use a plunging attack to quickly break all the blocks before time runs out. Don’t bother climbing neatly; just jump and dive from platform to platform.
41 – “Finally Recovered” After returning from a later section to Strate 300, check above the yellow structure; the crystal sits on top, now accessible with your newer movement options.
42 – “Combat: Explosive Towers” Another combat portal where you use explosive orbs to blow up enemies and towers. Use the explosions’ splash damage instead of trying to snipe everything perfectly.
Don’t make my mistake:
Demolition Site & Bananza Kong Challenges (24–26, 40, 48)
The demolition arena is where Bananza Kong’s power really shines. It’s also where I burned the most time on a single challenge.
24 – “Demolished by Bananza Kong” Pay the Constructon to clear the portal path, then transform into Bananza Kong. Simply finish the challenge in time for this first crystal.
25 – “Bananza Kong at Full Speed” This is the hard one: you must destroy everything in 20 seconds. What worked for me:
On the ground floor, immediately smash all breakable walls and the two concrete pillars.
Grab the barrel to reach the next floor, repeat the process.
On the top floor, clear the walls and leave the central concrete pillar for last, ending the run there.
Rushing upward too early will leave stray walls behind and fail the challenge.
26 – “Under the Central Pillar” After everything is destroyed, dig the dirt at the centre of the ruins to reveal this final demolition-site crystal.
40 – “Combat: Concrete Squadron” A nearby portal triggers another combat challenge. Use Bananza Kong’s heavy attacks to stun-lock armored enemies.
48 – “We’re Climbing Very High!” In the vertical portal challenge (“Secret Floor” line), this is the crystal at the very top. Use Bananza Kong to smash the bouncing enemies before they overwhelm you on the last elevators.
Stone Faces, Chimneys & Side Secrets (34, 36–39, 43–47, 49–53, 55–57, 58–60)
This batch includes some of the strangest hiding spots in the Canyon: in noses, earrings, cranes and even a hungry tree.
34 – “Nestled at the Foot of the Chimney” A crystal hidden at the base of one of the large chimneys-walk the whole circumference; it’s tucked into a recess.
36 – “Edible Earring” Embedded in the right ear of the big villain stone face linked to Void & Co.
37 – “Banana in the Nose” Punch the nose of that same stone face to pop the crystal out.
38 – “Hidden Under the Rascals” In the room between the three stone faces, there’s a crystal tucked away—check the central area carefully.
39 – “Rotating Concrete Container” Inside a rotating concrete pillar near the chimney; time your grab as the opening rotates toward you.
43, 44, 45 – “The Canyon Pouston” set At the big tree (Pouston), donate almost 1,000 gold for the first crystal, then around another 1,000 for the second and third. Feed it until no more prompts appear.
46 – “The Secret Floor” In the vertical portal challenge, on the first rising platform, look for a disguised stone wall. Break it to reveal this hidden crystal.
47 – “We’re Going Up!” Unmissable along the same vertical path; it’s directly on your route.
49 – “Cranky’s Rant – Canyon” Talk to Cranky Kong in the Canyon once his icon appears; listen to his tirade to earn the crystal.
50 – “Hide and Seek in the Canyon” Play hide-and-seek with the fractons:
One is camouflaged in brown right nearby.
One hides next to a stack of materials.
Another sneaks toward the outer edge of the area.
The last one I found by blowing up a suspicious block with an explosive near some gold coins—watch for slightly cracked stone.
51 – “Speed Banana” There’s a blue balloon next to a distant crystal. Hit the balloon to pull the crystal closer, bringing it within punching range before the timer runs out.
52 – “Behind a Giraffe Spot” In the “Clic-Clic Chimney” (the giraffe-pattern chimney), enter a small hidden room lined up with one of the giraffe spots.
53 – “Behind the Moving Walls” Still in Clic-Clic Chimney, destroy the moving stone walls to reach a hidden crystal.
54 – “Above the Moving Walls” Another Clic-Clic secret: a crystal embedded higher up in the chimney wall, just above those moving walls. Use careful wall jumps.
55 – “Behind the Grating” Find the indicated side passage, follow the tunnel, and you’ll reach a crystal sitting behind a grating at the end.
56 – “Hanging from the Crane” Right next to the Clic-Clic Chimney refuge, look up at the crane; the crystal is hanging from it. Climb the nearby structure and jump across.
57 – “Crane Charge” At the top of the chimney, smash the suspended concrete block to reveal another crystal.
58 – “Combat: Bouncing Brambles” Pay the Constructon to clear the portal, then enter. Use a chunk of rock or Bananza Kong’s charged punch to safely destroy the spiky enemies.
59 – “The Foreman’s Hideout” Hidden behind a rock wall, accessible either by coming from Strate 301 or by using Bananza Ostrich if you have that form. This was one of my last missing ones.
60 – “Coin Trade – Canyon” Talk to Trocton and pay the required amount of gold rings to receive the final Canyon crystal for Strate 300.
Once you defeat Grumpy Kong, you can dive into Strate 301, the industrial sub-layer full of lasers and dormitories. Several of these entries actually reward multiple crystals but only take one slot in your list.
Screenshot from Donkey Kong Bananza
61 – “Grumpy Kong Defeated!” After the boss, drop into the Canyon’s 301 layer to collect three crystals waiting there.
62 – “Combat: Laser Walls” Portal challenge: jump over the first two laser beams (use an air roll for the second), then burrow underground to bypass the final lasers and reach the last enemy.
63 – “Safe in the Refinery” In the refinery, head to the lower area near the office refuge to find this crystal tucked away.
64 – “Refinery View” From Strate 300, in the underground near the base-camp refuge, drop through a hole to land in a metal grating section of 301 where this crystal sits.
65 – “Sleeping in the Dorm” In the dorm area, check the lower level rooms; one has this crystal in plain sight.
66 – “Dorm Supervisor” From Strate 300, drop into the chimney near the gong, then dive down into 301 to reach the supervisor’s crystal.
67 – “Hidden in the Dorm” Near the dorm terrace refuge, search for a hidden nook; it’s easy to run past this one while focusing on enemies.
68 – “Combat: Over the Lasers” A portal challenge where you must fight enemies above laser grids. Take Bananza Kong and focus on hitting their feet while timing your jumps to avoid lasers.
69, 70, 71 – Laser Zone Crossroads set Use the portal at the indicated crossroads:
69 – “Laser Zone Crossroads” Run forward and ground-slam the marked spots to raise stone towers and shield yourself from lasers. The first crystal is on the main path and almost impossible to miss.
70 – “Discovery in the Laser Zone” In the second-to-last area, break a stone block off to the side to find this hidden crystal.
71 – “End of the Laser Zone” Complete the course to grab the final crystal at the exit.
72 – “Dorm De-Void-ed” Follow the purple cable to find and destroy the Void mechanism corrupting the dorm. Once it’s gone, a previously blocked crystal becomes available in the open dorm room.
73 – “Mixo-dingo Defeated!” Beating Mixo-dingo gives you three more crystals as a reward.
74 – “Mixo-dingo’s Farewell Gift” After the fight, dig at the marked spot in his arena to find a final hidden crystal.
75 – “Deep in the Refinery” Use the well from Strate 300 to descend. On your map, use the up/down vertical view to line up your position with the refinery section containing this crystal.
76 – “Time Smash: Moving Targets” Activate the mechanism and throw projectiles at all the moving blocks before the timer ends. Prioritise the furthest, fastest targets first—these are easiest to miss.
77 – “Treasure Near the Triceratops” Look for a mound of debris near the previous Time Smash and dig into it to unearth the crystal.
78 – “Under the Ossicone Chimneys” Pay Constructon in Strate 300 to ride a minecart into the Ossicone chimneys area. Smash the wall blocking the chimney and drop into 301 to reach this crystal.
79 – “In the Hanging Corridor” Enter the chimney from Strate 300 and follow the suspended tunnel through to the crystal at the far end.
Post-Game Bonus – Strate 302 Banana (80)
Strate 302 only holds a single crystal, and it’s post-game only. This is the one that kept my total from 100% for a while.
80 – “Helmet Collection” After finishing the game, go to Strate 302 and talk to Eleganton while wearing your miner helmet. If he “likes your style”, he rewards you with the final Banandium Crystal for the Canyon set.
Final Checks & What You Get for 100% Canyon
If you’ve followed this route, you should now have every Canyon-related crystal cleared in your list. If you’re still short, triple-check these notorious troublemakers:
Hidden rooms in the village houses (27, 28)
Back-side drops of the Great Wheel (31, 32)
The Foreman’s Hideout via Strate 301 or Bananza Ostrich (59)
The Helmet Collection post-game requirement with the miner helmet equipped (80)
Clearing the Canyon fully gives you a big chunk of Banandium skill points to push Donkey Kong and his Bananza forms even further, and it feels great to see that zone counter finally hit 100%. If I could redo it, I’d tackle Canyon late, once I had all movement powers and enough gold saved; it turns the hunt from frustrating into a satisfying clean-up run.
If I managed to claw my way from 59/60 confusion to a clean 100%, you absolutely can too. Take it section by section, don’t be afraid to experiment with falls and hidden walls, and the Canyon Stratum will be off your checklist for good.
