Halloween Hotfix Removes Controversial Closet Power-Up Before Launch

A closet was briefly both a hiding place and a high-risk tactical play in Halloween: The Game. Two civilian players could trigger an “Ask Out” prompt, work a heart meter together and earn the “Stronger Together” buff — while the shaking closet and audible encounter risked drawing Michael Myers straight to them.

The optional Two-Person Power-Up was removed during deluxe-edition early access, along with a related advantage assigned to Lynda, the game’s flirtatious playable civilian. It was never required to win a match, but it offered a small gameplay perk and deliberately echoed the kind of vulnerable, reckless behavior found in slasher films.

The decisive issue was not simply that the interaction was sexualized. Laurie Strode is 17 in this version of the game, and its reinforcement system could bring dead players back as older characters, including Samuel Loomis. IllFonic said the hotfix addressed an unintended issue that allowed those end-game reinforcement characters to access the minigame, calling it a major oversight.

That explanation clarifies the immediate fix, but it does not resolve the anger around how it was handled. The update arrived under generic bug-fix notes without an explicit entry for the removal, leaving players to discover that the closet interaction and Lynda’s trait had vanished. Steam and Reddit threads filled with demands to restore the feature, while others focused on the underlying safeguarding failure rather than its loss.

The reported Steam app information also identifies Halloween Mystery: 100 Hidden Object Fruits, a hidden-object title, creating a major mismatch with accounts describing an asymmetrical IllFonic PvP game. Whatever version players were discussing, the verdict is clear: a system involving age-sensitive characters needed a hard restriction before release, and future removals deserve plain, itemized patch notes.
