Does Elden Ring Support Cross-Platform Multiplayer?

Apparently, There Are Some Limitations To The Scope Of Elden Ring

FromSoftware games have always implemented multiplayer in an uncanny way. Although all the studio’s Soulslikes games are primarily designed as single-player experiences, you’ll find that someone is always invading your world or interacting with you in an amusing manner. Many newcomers to Elden Ring have heard high praises of the game, especially regarding its unique multiplayer.

You might be looking forward to playing it as well, but if you aren’t sure about whether Elden Ring is cross-platform, or whether it supports cross-gen progression, well then, you’re in the right place.

Is Elden Ring Cross-Platform

Sadly, Elden Ring does not support cross-platform multiplayer. If you’re a PlayStation owner, you won’t be able to interact with players on PC or Xbox in any way.

Luckily, Elden Ring does come with cross-generational support. PS4/PS5 owners have matchmaking with other PS4/PS5 owners in multiplayer, but not with gamers on PC or Xbox. For Xbox players, it’s vice versa. Cross-generational support isn’t just limited to multiplayer as save files can be transferred between consoles made by the same company, allowing you to continue Elden Ring from where you left off on your last-gen device.

It’s also worth keeping in mind that Elden Ring console players need an online membership of their respective platforms to access multiplayer features. Colosseum Battles, PvP, and online summoning, all require you to either have an active PlayStation Plus or Xbox Live subscription, so be sure to buy one beforehand.

Will Elden Ring Offer Cross-platform Support In An Update?

When players first found out about how huge of a part multiplayer would play in Elden Ring, calling them excited would be an understatement. They were amped up and a great deal of them wanted to play PvP with friends who used different consoles, but unfortunately, Elden Ring never came with cross-platform, and that notion remains nothing more than a fleeting dream even today.

More than a year after launch, Ray Tracing was added to Elden Ring through an update. The possibility of cross-platform integration happening in a similar update in the future seems unlikely, simply because if it was in development, FromSoftware would have let players know earlier when this was a burning issue.

Currently, the studio is busy working on the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC for Elden Ring. While I doubt they’ll patch in cross-platform for the game with the expansion, it wouldn’t come as a surprise if that indeed ended up coming true — fingers crossed.

Elden Ring not being cross-platform is a little heartbreaking, but its single-player narrative absolutely kills it in every regard. The single-player mode isn’t held back in any way if you aren’t playing online.

You may not be able to use mechanics such as requesting other players for help from different consoles, but with NPCs and friends on the same platform, the summoning features work like a charm, so definitely give the game a try.
