Marathon: How to Get Research Clearance & Synthsilk Sample

Marathon: How to Get Research Clearance & Synthsilk Sample

FinalBoss·6/1/2026·6 min read

The objective text for this Marathon step makes it sound like a single pickup, and that is exactly why so many runs fall apart halfway through. This is a Sekiguchi Genetics contract from the Parasitism chain (the relevant step is Parasitism 4), and it is a three-stage loop, not one grab. The reliable route is Maintenance → Bio-Research → Dire Marsh DCON: download Research clearance in Maintenance, extract the Synthsilk Sample in Bio-Research, then deposit the sample at a DCON in Dire Marsh and let it process. Miss the rhythm of those three stages and the contract turns into a long, avoidable rerun.

The short version

  • Contract: Parasitism 4 — a Sekiguchi (Sekiguchi Genetics) faction contract.
  • Route: Maintenance → Bio-Research → a DCON in Dire Marsh.
  • Step 1: Download Research clearance from a terminal on the second floor, south side of Maintenance, inside a small control room.
  • Step 2: Using that terminal triggers a lockdown that spawns UESC enemies, including a Ghost Commander. Clear them before you leave.
  • Step 3: In Bio-Research, extract the Synthsilk Sample from an orange wall-mounted dispenser — not a normal terminal.
  • Step 4: Deliver the sample to a DCON in Dire Marsh (the Greenhouse-area DCON is the closest) and wait for it to process.

Step 1: Download Research clearance in Maintenance

Head into the main Maintenance building and get vertical first. The clearance terminal is on the second floor, on the south side, inside a small control room. Once you are upstairs, sweep south until you reach that enclosed room — that is where you interact.

If you stay on the ground floor, you just burn time and resources working through interior angles without getting closer to the objective. Get up a level, orient north-south, and push toward the south-side control room.

The terminal triggers a lockdown — do not bolt

The clearance interaction is not a passive data pickup. Using the terminal locks the area down and spawns UESC enemies and robots, including a Ghost Commander among the reinforcements. The step is only truly finished once you have dealt with that response force and reopened your exit.

Play it like a defense hold, not a sprint. Use the room and its doorway as a funnel instead of chasing targets into the open floor. Grabbing the clearance and trying to run immediately turns the rest of Maintenance into a crossfire. If your build is fragile, commit to a short, disciplined clear before rotating out — surviving cleanly here is faster than dying fast. Step 2: Extract the Synthsilk Sample in Bio-Research

Once you reach Bio-Research, stop looking for another terminal. The Synthsilk Sample comes from an orange wall-mounted dispenser inside the building — not a desk, container, or standard console. You extract it from the machine on the wall, so search at wall height, not at inventory or table height.

If you are circling regular terminals in Bio-Research and nothing progresses, you are in the right building but using the wrong interactable. Scan the perimeter walls for the orange dispenser, interact, and let the extraction finish before you move on. This is the single detail behind most failed runs: players reach Bio-Research correctly but waste minutes checking the wrong objects.

Step 3: Deliver the sample to a DCON in Dire Marsh

The chain finishes at a DCON in Dire Marsh. The Greenhouse-area DCON is the closest and most convenient turn-in from Bio-Research, but it is not the only valid one — pick the station with the safest path between you and it. If you need a map of where these stations sit, check our guide to all DCON locations.

One detail that catches people out: the handoff is not instant. It is a deposit-and-wait process. Drop the sample in, let the machine process it, and do not assume the objective is done the moment you interact. If you are low on resources, secure the immediate area or at least hold cover while the DCON finishes.

Common mistakes that waste the run

  • Leaving Maintenance too early: the clearance terminal triggers a lockdown and an enemy wave with a Ghost Commander. Touching the terminal is not the same as safely finishing the step.
  • Staying on the ground floor: the terminal is on the second floor, south side, in a small control room. Get upstairs first.
  • Searching Bio-Research terminals: the sample comes from an orange wall-mounted dispenser, not a normal console.
  • Treating the DCON like an instant deposit: the machine has to process the sample before the objective updates.
  • Optimizing for shortest path over safest path: each stage has a forced interaction window, so greedy movement gets punished.

Practical takeaway

Stop treating Parasitism 4 like two separate scavenger hunts. It is one connected chain with three anchors: download the clearance on the second floor, south side of Maintenance and survive the lockdown; extract the sample from the orange wall dispenser in Bio-Research; then deposit it at a Dire Marsh DCON and wait for processing. Bring a balanced kit — enough sustain and close-to-mid range firepower for the Maintenance fight, then slow your tempo in Bio-Research so you do not blow past the extractor. Follow that order and the Research clearance and Synthsilk Sample steps become predictable instead of frustrating. If you are still working through Sekiguchi’s contracts, our faction upgrades guide covers what to spend your rewards on next.
