With what has been an incredibly tough year for many, TV has yet again shown us that it is always there to make us feel better. With lockdown, many of us have managed to get around to that show we’ve always fancied and get through our “to watch” backlogs. Although we can be optimistic about 2021, its currently looking like there could still be big chunks of time that many of us will be stuck at home again. So, what do we watch now?
Thankfully the TV schedule for 2021 is ram-packed and there is plenty of visual gorgeousness to look forward to. Here at FinalBoss, there are plenty of “geeky” upcoming TV shows in 2021 we are eager to watch. So here are our top picks for TV in 2021.
Netflix
The Witcher Season 2
Many of us enjoyed the first season of The Witcher, despite being slightly confused at times by the timelines. I for one can’t wait to see Geralt, Ciri and the gang again. With incredible acting performances, especially from Henry Cavill (who plays Geralt) and a gory grimdark feel, it’s an incredibly compelling show. Set for release in 2021, The Witcher season 2 has no fixed release date due to COVID-19 (although the rumours suggest an August release).
The Sandman Season 1
Based on the DC comic book series of the same name by Neil Gaiman, The Sandman has had filming delays but on October 15th, filming did commence. The series follows Dream, to be played by Tom Sturridge, who is one of the Endless (the embodiment of powerful human aspects). The story has been written to be set in the year 2021, so I imagine they would be eager to release it in 2021 as well.
Disney+
WandaVision Season 1
The first of many Disney+ shows due in 2021, WandaVision follows Wanda Maximoff and Vision as they try and live a normal life in suburbia. This MCU series will be released on the 15th of January 2021.
The Falcon and the Winter Soldier Season 1
Reprising their roles as the popular characters, Sam Wilson (Falcon) and Bucky Barnes (The Winter Soldier), Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan fight the anarchist group, Flag-Smashers. Set after Endgame, Season 1 will premiere March 19, 2021.
Loki Season 1
Perhaps the most anticipated Disney+ TV show premiering in 2021, Tom Hiddleston reprises his role as the sneaky fan favourite villain, Loki. In this crime thriller, Loki works with the Time Variance Authority to alter timelines, which we all know from Endgame can be very tricksy. Loki will hopefully be released in May 2021 for six episodes.
What If…? Season 1
An animated series about what would have happened if certain events in the MCU had happened differently? Yes please! Jeffrey Wright narrates the series which includes voice performances from many of the original actors who played the live-action characters. The first season has 10 episodes and will be released mid-2021.
Hawkeye Season 1
The true MVP of the MCU, Hawkeye is finally getting some solo attention. Jeremy Renner reprises his role, and the brilliant Hailee Steinfeld will play his daughter, Kate Bishop. Hopefully, COVID-19 permitting, this show will grace our screens late-2021.
Ms Marvel Season 1
One that has perhaps flown under the radar a little bit, Ms Marvel is set for release late-2021. It follows Kamala Khan, Marvels first Muslim main character, who is played by Iman Vellani. Kamala writes superhero fan fiction, only to gain powers of her own.
The Book of Boba Fett Season 1
The Mandalorian is one of the diamonds of Disney+ and at FinalBoss, we cannot wait to see one of the stand-out stars get his own spin-off. The Book of Boba Fett will be released in December 2021. Who knows if we will get a series of The Mandalorian in 2021 as well but I’m sure The Book of Boba Fett will be enough to satisfy our Star Wars needs.
Amazon Prime
The Lord of the Rings Season 1
Arguably the most anticipated TV series of 2021 (if not all time?), The Lord of the Rings is coming to Amazon Prime. Set in the Second Age of Middle Earth (a very, very long time before The Lord of The Rings trilogy by Peter Jackson), we will see a very different world to what we are accustomed to, including a very different looking Sauron. The Wheel of Time Season 1
Overshadowed by the news of the upcoming Amazon Prime Lord of the Rings show, The Wheel of Time is also in production by Amazon. Starring Rosamund Pike, The Wheel of Time was set to be released in 2020 but filming was halted in March 2020 because of you know what. It is now, hopefully, scheduled for some point in 2021.
HBO Max
Zack Snyder’s Justice League
I might be taking a bit of a liberty here as it is in theory a four-hour film (eek!), it will originally be released as a four-part miniseries on HBO Max in March 2021. Originally a 2017 film directed by Zack Snyder, Zack had to step down from production. He was replaced by Joss Whedon, who made major changes to the film but after the critical response and box-office disaster of the theatrical release, fans cried out to see the “Snyder Cut” of the film. Whether it will be any better is yet to be seen.
BBC
The Green Planet
With many people, whatever Sir David Attenborough releases is absolutely essential viewing. In 2021, we are getting The Green Planet, which focuses on plants from around the world. I, for one, can’t wait for Sir David to bring the world of plants to life for me with his dulcet tones.
His Dark Materials Season 3
I have been really enjoying the BBC’s adaptation of Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials, with the fantastic Dafne Keen, Amir Wilson and Ruth Wilson. We don’t have any confirmation that Season 3 will be released in 2021 but the release schedule has been very rigid so far, being in early November for two years on the trot. I am really excited to see how they conceptualise some of the events in the final series, so season 3 is a real must for me.
