Why Combine Recipes Matter in Monster Hunter Stories 3
After spending my first 15 hours in Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection basically spamming basic Potions and raw items, I realized I was leaving a ton of power on the table. The breakthrough came the first time I opened the Combine menu after a few side stories and Melynx trades – suddenly I went from “barely scraping by” to having answers for almost every situation: healing, status cures, traps, bombs, and huge attack/defense buffs.
This guide pulls every combine recipe into one place, along with:
Each item’s effect
The exact ingredients you need
How to unlock the recipe (Melynx Emporium, side story, or default)
Which recipes you should prioritize at each stage of the game
If you’re tired of wasting materials on low-impact crafts or wondering whether that 1500 Silver Trade Point recipe is worth it, this is for you.
How Combining Works (and When You Actually Unlock Stuff)
At the start, your Combine list is tiny – basically just simple healing. As you progress, it branches out through two main paths:
Melynx Emporium – Spend Silver Trade Points to buy new combine recipes (usually 200–1500 points each).
Side stories / quests – Completing specific character chapters (Kora, Thea, Gaul, Ogden) or named quests unlocks some of the strongest and most utility-heavy recipes.
Don’t make my early mistake of hoarding Silver Trade Points “for later.” A few cheap 200–300 point recipes give you cures for almost every nasty status effect and make the early game way smoother.
These are the recipes you’ll feel the benefit from almost immediately. I’d unlock and craft these first as soon as the ingredients and Trade Points are available.
Core Healing: Potions and Party Heals
Potion
Effect: Restores the HP of one ally.
Ingredients: 2× Herb, 2× Blue Mushroom.
Unlock: Available by default.
Why it matters: This is your bread-and-butter heal. I basically always keep a stack of these cooking because Herbs and Blue Mushrooms are everywhere.
Mega Potion
Effect: Significantly restores the HP of one ally.
Ingredients: 2× Potion, 2× Honey.
Unlock: Melynx Emporium – 1500 Silver Trade Points.
Tip: This is a big early Trade Point sink, but once your party HP scales up, regular Potions start feeling weak. I picked this up as soon as I could reliably gather Honey.
Lifesoot
Effect: Restores a small amount of HP to all allies.
Ingredients: 2× Herb, 2× Stone.
Unlock: Melynx Emporium – 300 Silver Trade Points.
Use case: Great for topping everyone off after minor chip damage instead of wasting single-target Potions.
Lifepowder
Effect: Restores HP of all allies.
Ingredients: 2× Godbug, 2× Wyvern Barbs.
Unlock: Complete “Gaul’s Unexpected Side” (Gaul Chapter 1 Side Story).
Why it’s huge: This is your first strong party heal. I saved it for tougher fights and emergencies.
Dust of Life
Effect: Completely restores HP of all allies.
Ingredients: 2× Lifepowder, 2× Gloamgrass Bud.
Unlock: Complete “Rent Negotiations” (Gaul Chapter 3 Side Story).
Note: This is late-ish, but once you get it, keep a few for brutal boss fights.
Max Potion
Effect: Fully restores the HP of one ally.
Ingredients: 2× Godbug, 2× Honey, 2× Mandragora.
Unlock: Complete “Rent Negotiations” (Gaul Chapter 3 Side Story).
Synergy: Pairs nicely with Dust of Life for full sustain in long encounters.
Ancient Potion
Effect: Fully restores HP and stamina of one ally.
Ingredients: 2× Immunizer, 1× Kelbi Horn.
Unlock: Complete “Rent Negotiations” (Gaul Chapter 3 Side Story).
Comment: Think of it as the “panic button” potion. I reserve these for key carries in drawn-out fights.
Early Status Cures (Don’t Skip These)
I wasted hours running back to camp because I didn’t have cures on hand. These 200-point Melynx recipes fix that.

Spirited Soda
Effect: Cures Exhaust on one ally.
Ingredients: 3× Powerfruit, 2× Honey.
Unlock: Complete “The Great Windmill Heist”.
Tip: Great once monsters start draining stamina in tougher regions.
Nulberry Elixir
Effect: Cures all abnormal statuses of one ally.
Ingredients: 2× Nulberry, 2× Cactus Flower.
Unlock: Melynx Emporium – 1000 Silver Trade Points.
Worth it?: Yes, once you’re seeing multi-status bosses. This replaced most individual cures in my bag.
Once you’re comfortable keeping everyone alive, start investing in buff items. These can shave whole turns off boss fights if you stack them smartly.
Immunizer
Effect: Grants Regenerate to one ally (HP regen over time).
Ingredients: 2× Bitterbug, 2× Honey.
Unlock: Melynx Emporium – 500 Silver Trade Points.
Personal tip: I slept on this at first; then I realized it basically gives you “free” healing every turn in long fights.
Dash Juice
Effect: Grants Stamina Regen Up and restores stamina of one ally.
Ingredients: 2× Immunizer, 2× Dash Extract.
Unlock: Melynx Emporium – 1500 Silver Trade Points.
Use it for: Monsties or weapons that churn through stamina-based skills.
Grape Juice
Effect: Restores HP and boosts various stats.
Ingredients: 2× Azurian Grapes, 2× Gloamgrass Bud.
Unlock: Complete “The Tarkuan Trotter” (Thea Chapter 3 Side Story).
Note: Great hybrid support item; I usually pop this at the start of tough fights.
Vigor Powder
Effect: Restores stamina of all allies.
Ingredients: 2× Godbug, 1× Dash Extract, 1× Kelbi Horn.
Unlock: Complete “Locating the REAL Legend”.
Why it’s key: When your whole team is gassed mid-fight, this saves you from wasting multiple single-target items.
Damage Items, Traps, and Knives (Control the Fight)
This is where Monster Hunter Stories 3 really rewards good prep. Traps and throwable items let you control monster positioning, status, and retreat chances – and they’re almost all locked behind side stories or the Melynx Emporium.
Bombs & Damage Tools
Big Barrel Bomb
Effect: Deals fixed damage to one enemy and inflicts Burn.
Ingredients: 1× Big Barrel, 2× Fire Herb, 1× Nitroshroom.
Unlock: Complete “A Rocky Past” (Kora Chapter 1 Side Story).
Use: Great opener or part-break tool when you know a tough enemy’s weak point.
Mega Barrel Bomb
Effect: Deals greater fixed damage to one enemy with a chance to inflict Burn. Stronger than Big Barrel Bomb.
Ingredients: 1× Big Barrel Bomb, 2× Scatterfish.
Unlock: Complete “Cave Kids” (Kora Chapter 3 Side Story).
Sonic Bomb
Effect: Releases a huge blast of sound that can stun an enemy.
Ingredients: 1× Screamer Sac, 2× Fire Herb.
Unlock: Complete “A Rocky Past” (Kora Chapter 1 Side Story).
Tip: Save these for monsters that burrow or rely on certain animations; they’re incredibly disruptive.
Flash Bomb
Effect: Blast of light that can inflict Darkness on an enemy.
Ingredients: 2× Flashbug, 2× Sap Plant, 2× Stone.
Unlock: Complete “A Rocky Past” (Kora Chapter 1 Side Story).
Traps and Capture / Control Items
Shock Trap
Effect: Inflicts Paralysis on trapped enemies.
Ingredients: 1× Trap Tool, 2× Thunderbug.
Unlock: Complete “Letter From an Unknown Sender” (Ogden Chapter 1 Side Story).
Pitfall Trap
Effect: Triggers on enemy attack; trapped enemy cannot move.
Ingredients: 1× Trap Tool, 2× Spider Web, 1× Ivy.
Unlock: Complete “The Sender’s Identity” (Ogden Chapter 3 Side Story).
Tranq Trap
Effect: Inflicts Sleep on trapped enemies.
Ingredients: 1× Trap Tool, 2× Sleepfish.
Unlock: Complete “Letter From an Unknown Sender” (Ogden Chapter 1 Side Story).
Paintball
Effect: Increases chances of a monster retreating.
Ingredients: 2× Sap Plant, 2× Paintberry.
Unlock: Complete “A Step Towards Conservation”.
Why it’s mandatory: If you care about eggs and Monsties, this is non-negotiable. I always keep a stack ready.
Throwing Knives and Status Offense
Knives are great when you want to play “status roulette” or set up turns without burning skills.
Poison Knife
Effect: Deals damage to one enemy with a chance to inflict Poison.
Ingredients: 1× Throwing Knife, 2× Toadstool.
Unlock: Melynx Emporium – 800 Silver Trade Points.
Paralysis Knife
Effect: Deals damage to one enemy with a chance to inflict Paralysis.
Ingredients: 1× Throwing Knife, 2× Anesfreesia.
Unlock: Melynx Emporium – 800 Silver Trade Points.
Sleep Knife
Effect: Deals damage to one enemy with a chance to inflict Sleep.
Ingredients: 1× Throwing Knife, 2× Sleepyfish.
Unlock: Melynx Emporium – 800 Silver Trade Points.
Putting It All Together: What to Unlock First
There are a lot of recipes here, and you won’t unlock everything right away. Based on how my progression felt, here’s the rough priority I wish I’d followed:
Immediately / Very Early
Potion (default), Antidote, Energy Drink, Intuitizer, Paracare, Soap Scud, Lifesoot, Paintball.
Early-Mid Game
Immunizer, Nulberry Elixir, Big Barrel Bomb, Flash Bomb, Sonic Bomb, Shock Trap, Tranq Trap, Lifepowder.
Mid-Late Game
Mega Potion, Dash Juice, Demondrug, Armorskin, Poison/Paralysis/Sleep Knives, Mega Barrel Bomb, Vigor Powder, Grape Juice.
Late / Boss Prep
Mega Demondrug, Mega Armorskin, Dust of Life, Max Potion, Ancient Potion.
If you focus your Silver Trade Points on the cheap status cures first, then your core combat buffs and traps, you’ll feel a noticeable difficulty drop long before you see the truly late-game recipes like Dust of Life and Ancient Potion.
Final Thoughts
Once I started treating the Combine menu as part of my build – not just an afterthought – Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection opened up. Side stories stopped feeling like filler and became targeted unlock hunts, and Silver Trade Points turned into a meaningful resource instead of something I accidentally capped.
If you work through the recipes in this guide and prioritize the ones that match your playstyle, you’ll hit that sweet spot where every tough fight feels manageable because you always have the right tool in your pouch. And if I could turn my clumsy, item-ignoring early hours into confident, trap-laying hunts, you absolutely can too.
