Why Beating Chunk Is Worth It (And Why I Struggled)

After spending a full evening looping around the East Wing as Grace, I got completely sick of Chunk. Every time I tried to backtrack for items or explore a new room in the Sanatorium, that walking mountain of meat was blocking a corridor and forcing me to route around him. I originally assumed he was a pure “stalker” enemy you were meant to avoid like a classic Tyrant.

The breakthrough came when I realized two things:

  • You actually can kill Chunk in the East Wing.
  • Doing so rewards you with the rare Überwacher (Overseer) talisman, 1000 AP, a Bronze trophy / 10 Gamerscore, and-most importantly-removes him from the area, opening up exploration.

Once I understood that, I stopped treating him like an annoyance and started treating him like a proper boss. This guide walks you through how I reliably kill Chunk now: what to bring, where to fight him, and how to avoid wasting ammo and heals like I did on my first attempts.

Chunk 101: What You’re Dealing With

Chunk is a Grace-only “Goliath” type enemy that patrols the Sanatorium’s East Wing. You first properly encounter him on the upper floor: a massive, swollen creature that fills the narrow hallways and will happily body-block entire routes.

  • Role: Mid-game mini-boss / stalker hybrid for Grace.
  • Behavior: Slow, relentless, patrols key corridors; will follow you into most nearby rooms.
  • Threats: High-damage melee hits and a nasty grab that can shred your health bar or outright kill you on higher difficulties.
  • Weakness: Exposed fleshy growths and soft tissue on his upper body, plus stun windows after certain attacks.

What makes Chunk dangerous is not complex patterns but the combination of his huge health pool and the cramped environment. If you try to fight him in a tight corridor, you’ll get cornered, grabbed, and probably panic-heal until you’re out of resources.

So the real fight starts long before the first bullet: you win this encounter by choosing when and where to engage him.

When To Fight Chunk (And When To Wait)

On my first run, I made the mistake of trying to “prove a point” and fight Chunk as soon as I realized he was killable. That cost me almost all my pistol ammo and half my healing stock, which I regretted about 20 minutes later.

From my later playthroughs, here’s when I recommend tackling him:

  • After you’ve fully looted the easy, Chunk-free rooms in the East Wing.
  • Once you have a decent stash of handgun ammo and at least one stronger option (shotgun, magnum, or crafted powerful rounds).
  • Once you’ve crafted a couple of healing injectors and ideally one emergency heal in reserve.

If you’re playing on higher difficulties (Hard/Nightmare), it’s worth doing a quick resource loop first: check side rooms, smash every crate, and make use of crafting in the pause menu via Options → Crafting when you’re in a safe spot.

TL;DR: Don’t rush the fight. Take 10-15 minutes to shore up ammo and heals-the Overseer talisman is great, but not if you crawl into the next section broke.

Your exact gear will vary depending on how you’ve been playing Grace, but this baseline has worked well for me across difficulties:

  • Main firearm: Your strongest upgraded handgun with at least 40-60 rounds.
  • Backup: Shotgun or magnum with 6-10 shells/rounds if available, saved for openings on weak points.
  • Special ammo: Any acid or high-damage rounds you can craft. These chew through his health and help stagger.
  • Melee: Knife or melee weapon in reasonable condition, just in case you need to finish him off while low on ammo.
  • Healing: Minimum of 2 standard heals + 1 stronger heal/injector for emergencies.
  • Talismans/charms: Anything that boosts firearm damage or survivability. You don’t have the Overseer yet—that’s the reward—but any generic defense or healing bonus helps.

Also, make sure your inventory is tidy before the fight. I lost a run because I picked up a drop mid-fight and the full-inventory popup got me grabbed. Do a quick clean-up in Inventory → Arrange ahead of time so you’re not wrestling the menu mid-battle.

Pick a Good Arena: Don’t Fight Him in the Hall

This next step is where most people fail—you absolutely should not try to kill Chunk in the narrow corridor where you first bump into him. That’s a recipe for getting cornered with no dodge room.

Instead, you want to:

  • Identify a larger room nearby with at least one loop route (around beds, tables, or partitions) and a reasonably open center.
  • Clear that room of regular enemies first so they don’t join the party.
  • Open any doors in and out of that room so you don’t get stuck on handles while kiting.

Once you’ve picked your arena, lure Chunk there:

  • Step into his line of sight in the corridor.
  • Backpedal toward your chosen room, occasionally turning to make sure he’s still following.
  • Cross the room’s threshold and immediately move deeper in so he fully commits and you’re not pinned in the doorway.

Pro tip: If there’s a room with a central object you can circle, that’s ideal. You can break line of sight for a second to reload or heal while he trudges around the obstacle.

Chunk’s Moveset & How to Exploit It

Chunk isn’t complex, but understanding his basic moves makes the fight much safer. Here’s what I consistently see from him:

  • Slow advance: His default walk. This is your main damage window—backpedal and fire at weak spots.
  • Short lunge / shoulder slam: A quick burst forward if you stay too close too long.
  • Grab attack: If you’re within arm’s reach, he’ll try to snatch you up, dealing huge damage or outright killing you on high difficulty.
  • Recovery stagger: After certain heavy attacks or when hit hard (e.g., with acid), he’ll flinch or stumble, giving you a brief all-in window.

The key is to maintain a medium distance: close enough that most shots hit his soft tissue, but far enough to sidestep lunges and grabs.

Step-by-Step Strategy: How I Kill Chunk Consistently

1. Open with Your Strongest Burst

As soon as Chunk crosses the threshold into your chosen room, hit him with your best opener:

  • If you have acid or other special rounds, use one immediately on his chest or exposed weak spot.
  • Follow that with 2–3 shotgun/magnum shots while he’s reeling, aiming high for the tumors/soft spots.

This front-loads damage and often pushes him into a brief stagger. Don’t overstay, though—once he starts moving again, switch back to your handgun and kiting loop.

2. Kite and Strip His Health Safely

Once you’re in the rhythm, the fight becomes a predictable loop:

  • Back away while firing 2–3 handgun shots at his upper weak points.
  • When you feel you’re getting close to a wall or object, pivot around the room’s central obstacle to reset space.
  • If he starts a lunge or grab animation, stop shooting and strafe sideways rather than straight back.
  • Use furniture and corners to briefly break line of sight and reload in safety.

On my successful runs, I rarely fire more than three shots in a row without moving. The big mistake is getting greedy and tunnel-visioning on his HP—Chunk punishes standing still.

3. Use Staggers and Knockdowns Smartly

After enough focused damage, Chunk will visibly flinch or slow, and occasionally he’ll slump partway down. These are your money moments:

  • Dump your remaining shotgun/magnum shots into his weak spots.
  • If you’re low on ammo, you can move in for a few knife slashes—but only if he’s clearly stunned and you have a path to retreat.
  • Never stick around for more than a couple of melee hits; as soon as he starts to recover, sprint back to medium range.

I tried “going full melee hero” on one attempt and paid for it with a one-two combo that burned two heals. Think of melee as a finisher or bonus damage, not your main plan.

4. Manage Heals and Panic Moments

At some point you’ll take a hit; it happens. The important part is when you heal:

  • Don’t heal in the middle of the room with Chunk bearing down on you.
  • Use a corner or obstacle—duck behind it, force him to walk the long way around, pop into your menu, and use a heal.
  • Try to combine a heal with a reload so you’re not opening the menu twice in quick succession.

If he lands a grab and you barely survive, that’s when you use your strongest heal. The Overseer talisman you’re earning from this fight will eventually help with those clutch survivals, but you don’t have it yet—play safe.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Here are the errors that cost me the most retries:

  • Fighting in the hallway: You have almost no lateral movement, so his grab becomes a guaranteed hit.
  • Overcommitting to big guns: Emptying your shotgun early feels good but leaves you with only a peashooter for the second half. Save some heavy shots for staggers.
  • Ignoring his tells: If you see him hunch or raise an arm, stop firing and move. Eating a lunge because you wanted “one more bullet” is how you die.
  • Running past him “just this once”: I did this several times and ended up stuck later with him blocking a critical route when I was low on resources. If you’re going to kill him, commit and get it done.
  • Panicking on low health: Sprinting in a straight line with red HP just makes his lunge more likely to connect. Break line of sight, then heal.

Rewards: What You Get for Killing Chunk

Once you’ve pumped enough lead and acid into him, Chunk will finally collapse in a big, messy heap. Don’t forget to loot and check your rewards; here’s what you gain for all that effort:

  • Überwacher (Overseer) talisman: Equipping this increases your chance to survive otherwise lethal damage. In practice, this has saved my run multiple times when I got blindsided or grabbed in later areas.
  • 1000 AP: A big chunk (no pun intended) of upgrade points that you can immediately funnel into your preferred skills or stats.
  • Bronze trophy / 10 Gamerscore: A nice bonus, especially if you’re hunting achievements.
  • Clear East Wing: Chunk’s patrols stop entirely, making exploration, backtracking for collectibles, and puzzle-solving in the East Wing far less stressful.

That last point is underrated. The psychological relief of knowing you can take your time in those tight hallways without a living atrocity breathing down your neck is huge. It also makes it far easier to sweep the area for any remaining items or lore you might have missed while running from him earlier.

Final Thoughts: Make the East Wing Yours

Chunk felt borderline unfair the first time I met him—an unkillable wall of flesh turning every trip down the East Wing into a gamble. Once I understood that he was a killable mid-boss with real rewards, the whole section clicked into place.

If you set up a good arena, pace your shots, and resist the urge to face-tank him, the fight becomes manageable, even on higher difficulties. The Overseer talisman will then pay you back for the rest of the game by turning potential deaths into narrow escapes.

Take a bit of time to prepare, stick to the kiting strategy, and don’t panic when he closes the gap. If I could turn this walking nightmare into a permanent corpse with my first clumsy attempts, you can absolutely do it too—and once he’s gone, the Sanatorium’s East Wing finally feels like your territory instead of his.
