Pokemon Pokopia: How to Find Every Rocky Ridges Pokemon (All 36 Exclusives)

Rocky Ridges has 36 confirmed exclusive Pokémon — more area-locked species than anywhere else in Pokémon Pokopia — spread across 21 unique habitats that exist nowhere else in the game. You’ll see the number quoted as 36 or 37 depending on the source, and there’s a real reason for that (below). What matters more is that most of those species are gated behind specific habitat recipes, not luck, so the fast way through this region is a build list rather than a search.

The short version

• Unlock: finish “Yawn Up A Storm” in Withered Wasteland to restore rain and meet Kyogre, reach Great Rank, then scan your Pokédex at the green gate in the northeast Wasteland cave.
• 36 exclusives confirmed; a 37th shows up in some datamines and not others. Both numbers are honest, they’re just counting different things.
• 21 unique habitats here, including Piping-Hot Lava, the hot spring variants, and seven fossil displays in the Pewter-style museum.
• Volcanion is the region’s legendary and it arrives via a party, not a hunt: Stereo Rotom’s quest chain, Mood 100, Grand Curry, then a fireworks cannon.
• Current build: Ver. 1.1.1 (18 June 2026). Ver. 1.1.0 tuned habitat behaviour, so if you’re following a spring-era guide, some spawn timings will feel different.
• Build habitats in multiples. The most useful community finding for this region: once you know a recipe, build as many copies as the habitat lists Pokémon for. Spawns come faster and habitat level climbs faster.

Why the species count is 36 or 37

This is worth settling because three different numbers circulate and all three are defensible:

• 36 — the count of species confirmed exclusive to Rocky Ridges. This is the figure to use.
• 37 — 36 plus one extremely obscure spawn that appears in some datamines and not others. Nobody has produced a clean reproduction of it, so treat the 37th as unconfirmed rather than missing.
• 24 — a count you’ll see on some sites, which is the core mid-game roster: the species you meet during the region’s main progression, excluding late-game trophies, fossil-wing spawns and the legendary.

If a guide gives you 24 and another gives you 37, they aren’t contradicting each other; they’re drawing the boundary in different places. For living-dex tracking, plan around 36.

How to unlock Rocky Ridges

Rocky Ridges and Bleak Beach both open off the same story beat, and the gate has a rank check on it:

1. Restore rain in Withered Wasteland. That’s the “Yawn Up A Storm” chain: raise humidity to 100%, build the Rain Dance Site with two Castform Weather Charms plus a plate and food, lead Squirtle to it, then ask Slowpoke for his 100-point yawn.
2. Meet Kyogre. The storm triggers a cutscene; go to the fishing docks, repair the bridge and walls, and talk to Kyogre to make the rain permanent.
3. Reach Great Rank. The rank bump follows the Wasteland questline.
4. Use the green gate. In the northeast Wasteland cave, near where you rescue Onix, there’s a large green gate. Walk up and scan your Pokédex. If you’re at Great Rank it opens into Rocky Ridges.

If the region doesn’t appear immediately after the questline, sleep once and check again — the unlock flag sometimes needs a day to propagate. Once it’s open you’ll also have a route in from Bleak Beach. The full biome unlock order is laid out in our area and biome unlock guide.

The three zones that matter for spawns

Rocky Ridges is a Pewter City and Mt. Moon homage — crumbling museum, deep mine, fossils everywhere — and it splits into three functional layers:

• Surface ruins: the town remains, the broken Pokémon Center, and the museum entrance. Where the building-tagged and grass habitats live.
• Underground museum and fossil wing: seven fossil displays, mini exhibits, and the strangest habitat setups in the game.
• Deep mine and volcanic sector: ore deposits (copper, iron, gold, Pokémetal), hot springs, lava pockets, the railroad crossing, and the volcanic peak where Volcanion turns up.

Each distinct gimmick spot in the mine is effectively its own habitat — railroad crossing, hot spring, lava pocket, magma fishing spot. Treating them as scenery is the mistake that leaves people at half a roster.

Habitat recipes for the key species

These are the exact builds. Anything with a recipe is deterministic; you’re not waiting on luck, you’re waiting on materials.

Priority builds

If you only build four things here, build these:

• Music and magazines (Rotom). Not optional. Stereo Rotom’s quest chain is the gate on Volcanion, and its DJ specialty is what drives Mood in this region. Do this first.
• Gourmet’s altar (Mosslax). One offering dish. Mosslax’s food buffs raise your chance of rare items and habitat spawns — it makes every other hunt in the region faster.
• Railroad crossing (Carkol). Gather specialty, and this region is wall-to-wall ore. Carkol pays for itself in an afternoon.
• Mini museum (Gimmighoul + Arcanine). One build, two species, and Gimmighoul’s Collect specialty vacuums up coins and loose drops across the whole mine.

The rest of the roster, by zone

Surface and town ruins

Timburr and Gurdurr (both Build specialty) come from stacking Build-tagged decorations in one focused habitat around the ruins — crates, scaffolding, tools for Timburr, then heavier gear like sandbags, stone piles and metal beams to promote the site for Gurdurr. The mistake is scattering random decorations; you want stacked Build tags in one place.

Machop lives on the mountain trails at Plains Level 3 and brings the Lift specialty, which is what lets you shift heavy boulders in the mine and open side rooms with extra ore and habitats. Mareep sits on the grassy mountain ledges, also Plains Level 3. Diglett and Dugtrio round out the ground-type presence with Hype and Crush.

Bonsly and Sudowoodo (Bulldoze) and the Murkrow/Honchkrow line are the other surface-tier exclusives. Honchkrow’s Fly specialty is worth having for traversal alone.

Underground museum and fossil wing

Head north from the rebuilt Pokémon Center for the stairs down. This wing holds seven fossil displays, and it’s the densest cluster of odd habitat requirements in the game.

Aerodactyl is the prize here, tied to the fossil wing and its adjacent fossil-themed habitat. Pack the area with fossil items and lost relics and check after each sleep cycle. It shares spawn budget with generic Rock-types, so if it isn’t appearing, thin out the other Pokémon in the area and sleep to reroll.

Chest Form Gimmighoul wants the mini museum treated as an exhibit corner — small lost relics, dolls, and any armour fragments you’ve pulled out of the mine. Once the room reads as cluttered with valuables, it shows up clinging to a treasure chest.

A nice touch players have landed on: spare Dino parts from the fossil restorations make good themed furniture, and the museum is the obvious place to put it. Cosmetic, but the fossil wing is one of the few places in Pokopia where building for flavour and building for spawns point the same direction.

Deep mine and volcanic sector

Onix is the progression key down here — mountain peaks and deep caves, Cave Level 3, and its Tunnel Bore specialty is how you open the deeper shafts. Cubone sits around the cave entrances at Cave Level 1.

Larvitar and Tyranitar (Crush / Bulldoze) want a dedicated stone den in one of the side caves. Tyranitar’s spawn rate is low; build the den, sleep once or twice, and let the rotation come to you rather than camping it.

Vulpix lives around the volcanic vents at Plains Level 3 and is a prerequisite for tier-2 cooking recipes — which matters because cooking is the gate on Volcanion. Aron anchors the steel mining you’ll want before Bleak Beach, and Slugma feeds magma forge crafting. Volcarona is the late-game fire trophy and shares the region’s fire-heavy identity with Volcanion.

Lotad, Lombre and Kricketot fill out the remaining exclusives — the water-adjacent and ambient-bug slots that people forget Rocky Ridges even has.

Volcanion — the region’s legendary

Volcanion doesn’t spawn from a habitat. It shows up to a party.

First encounter:

1. Build the music and magazines habitat and work through Stereo Rotom’s quest chain.
2. The chain ends in “Time to Party!”, which needs the area at 100 Mood. Decorations and Hype-specialty Pokémon get you there.
3. Cook Grand Curry with Chef Dente and four Pokémon helpers.
4. When the party fires, go straight to the volcanic peak. The encounter is tied to the party afterglow — leave the area first and you can lose it.

Re-summoning it: buy a second cooking pot from the PC Shop, place it at your old party site, add 15 Leppa Berries, 15 Wheat and 5 Honey, bring Chef Dente plus four helpers, push Mood back to 100, and cook (about seven minutes). Then build a cannon from 1 Iron Ingot + 1 Vine and a firework from 1 Pokémetal + 1 Sturdy Stick + 1 Stone + 1 Paint, and fire it during the celebration. Volcanion asks to join in; accept and it lives in Rocky Ridges permanently.

Three things that speed this region up

• Build each habitat multiple times. The single most repeated piece of community advice, and it holds: once you know a recipe, build as many copies as the habitat lists Pokémon for. Spawns arrive faster and habitat level rises faster. The 3D Printer is how you afford to do that — photograph one CD rack, print six.
• Sleep to reroll. Spawn rotation is tied to sleep cycles. If a habitat is built correctly and nothing has moved in, sleep rather than standing there.
• Thin the area out. Rare spawns share budget with common ones. If Aerodactyl or Tyranitar won’t appear in a fully-built habitat, relocate some of the generic Rock-types out of the zone first.

How many Pokémon are exclusive to Rocky Ridges?

36 confirmed. A 37th appears in some datamines without a clean community reproduction. Counts of 24 you may see elsewhere are the core mid-game roster, excluding trophies, fossil-wing spawns and Volcanion.

Has the Volcanion unlock changed in any patch?

No. Through Ver. 1.1.1 (18 June 2026) the Stereo Rotom → Mood 100 → Grand Curry → volcanic peak chain is unchanged, and the fireworks-cannon re-summon still works.

Rocky Ridges isn’t showing on my map.

You either haven’t cleared “Yawn Up A Storm” and met Kyogre, or you’re not at Great Rank yet. If both are done, sleep once and re-check the green gate in the northeast Wasteland cave — scan your Pokédex at it.

Why won’t Aerodactyl appear?

Spawn budget. It competes with generic Rock-types in the same area. Move some of them out, pack the fossil wing with fossil items and lost relics, then sleep to reroll.

What should I build first here?

Music and magazines for Rotom. It gates Volcanion and its DJ specialty is your Mood engine for the whole region. Gourmet’s altar for Mosslax is a close second, because the food buffs raise rare-spawn rates everywhere else.
