You picked a Paladin to feel powerful, and instead Holy Bolt feels like a pea-shooter and Purify looks like a control button you never want to press. The Holy Purifier build fixes both: it turns Holy Bolt into a chain-reaction trigger and Purify into a real damage tool. This is the area-clear setup you want for Diablo IV: Lord of Hatred in Season of Infernal Chaos, especially in Helltides, Infernal Hordes, The Pit, and the Cursed Undercity.

The short version

  • Oath: Judicator Oath — it is the spine of the whole build.
  • Core loop: spam Holy Bolt from range, throw Judgment into the densest cluster, and detonate it with Purify (Absolution) for 380% damage and Vulnerable for 4 seconds.
  • Skills: Holy Bolt, Purify, Judgment, the Fanaticism and Defiance auras, and the Heaven’s Fury ultimate.
  • Key gear: Wreath of Auric Laurel, Seal of the Second Trumpet, Judicant’s Glaivehelm, and the Heaven’s Radiant Fire set.
  • Best at: dense, wave-based content. Weak at: isolated single-target boss damage.

Why Holy Purifier works in Season of Infernal Chaos

Season of Infernal Chaos (Season 10) rewards builds that turn enemy density into speed. Chaos Perks, Chaos Rifts, and the reworked Infernal Hordes all pay you for clearing packs fast and staying in motion. Holy Purifier is built for exactly that: Holy Bolt feeds constant pressure, Judgment marks the pack, and Purify’s Absolution detonation chains the kills together. You are not setting up for ten seconds before you do damage — the loop is live from the first Holy Bolt.

Skills and skill points

This is a Holy/Justice Paladin centered on the Judicator Oath. The action bar is Holy Bolt, Purify, Judgment, two auras, and your ultimate. A standard point spread looks like this:

  • Holy Bolt — max it (15 points, plus up to 5 from gear). It is a Basic skill from the Lord of Hatred expansion that throws a Holy Hammer, generates Faith, and scales from 90% damage at rank 1 to 229% at rank 15. Take the Ricocheting Bolt upgrade so the hammer bounces 3 times and clips more enemies.
  • Purify — 1 point, with the Absolution upgrade. Absolution lets you cast Purify on enemies for 380% damage and Vulnerable for 4 seconds instead of just Dazing them. This is the build’s damage engine, full stop.
  • Heaven’s Fury — your ultimate, max investment. It deals damage over 11 seconds and applies Judgment automatically as it hits, keeping marks on the screen for your hammers to detonate.
  • Fanaticism Aura — heavy investment (15 points plus gear) for attack speed and damage, which directly raises your Holy Bolt cast rate.
  • Defiance Aura — 1 point for the defensive layer, plus Falling Star for mobility and utility.
  • Consecration — mid investment for healing and area control while you kite.

Purify modifiers: Absolution first, then coverage

Absolution is the mandatory major upgrade. For the rest, pick the modifiers that make packs explode more reliably rather than stacking control:

  • Echo — Purify echoes 2 additional times outward from where it is cast, spreading the blast through a packed wave.
  • Size Bonus — increases Purify’s size by 50%, so more enemies catch the detonation.
  • Cooldown Reduction — cuts Purify’s cooldown by 1 second per enemy hit, up to 3 seconds, so dense content keeps it almost always available.
  • Faith Generation — generates 10 Faith per enemy hit, useful if your resources ever feel tight.
  • Sentence (also Judges enemies and cuts cooldown by 4 seconds) and Surrender (Stuns instead of Dazes for 4 seconds) are the alternative major nodes — usable, but Absolution is the one that makes this a build.

Gear: Uniques, Aspects, and the set that makes it sing

Your whole item plan should make Judgment touch more enemies and detonate harder. Prioritize this gear:

  • Wreath of Auric Laurel (Unique) — on a Lucky Hit, Holy Bolt has up to a 40% chance to trigger Purify, so your spammable basic starts detonating packs on its own.
  • Seal of the Second Trumpet (Unique) — increases Judgment damage and gives a 33% chance for a double detonation while running the Judicator Oath.
  • Judicant’s Glaivehelm (Unique) — up to a 40% chance to call down a blessed spear that applies a Judgment mark and deals impact damage whenever you use a Judicator skill.
  • Aspect of the Judicator — increases Judgment damage and explosion radius, the cleanest way to widen your chain reaction.
  • Aspect of Proselytizing — 40% chance for Judicator skills to chain to a nearby enemy.
  • Aspect of the Golden Hour — Judgment detonations trigger other nearby Judgment marks early, which is what produces the screen-wide chain.

The Heaven’s Radiant Fire set

This is the set payoff. Heaven’s Radiant Fire spreads your Judgment mark automatically to nearby unmarked targets, and marking enemies grants the Judgment Day buff: +12.5% damage for 10 seconds, stacking up to five times initially. With the full 5-piece bonus, that buff scales all the way to 40 stacks. That stacking damage is a big part of why the build keeps accelerating the longer a fight stays dense.

Paragon and stats

On the Paragon side, run the Law, Sentencing, Beacon, and Endure boards. The Law glyph scales Judgment damage with Strength, Sentencing carries a Legendary node granting 90% more damage to judged enemies, and Beacon adds a 90% damage increase with a nearby ally or mercenary. For stats, prioritize Critical Strike Chance, Attack Speed, and Holy Damage — faster attacks mean more Holy Bolt casts, which means more Judgment detonations and more Lucky Hit triggers. Round it out with Maximum Life and Resistances so you survive while kiting.

How to play it in real fights

Against normal packs

  • Open with Holy Bolt while moving into a good angle instead of charging the center.
  • Throw Judgment onto the densest cluster, not the first enemy you see.
  • Detonate with Purify (Absolution) as the pack commits, so the 380% hit and the Vulnerable window land on the enemies that matter.
  • Keep firing Holy Bolt through the group — the next chain detonation usually needs one more hit, and the Wreath of Auric Laurel proc can trigger Purify for you.

Against elites

Elites feel great when they are standing in trash: tag the cluster, force Vulnerable, and let the surrounding mobs amplify the chain. A lone elite slows you down, because your damage comes from spread, not single-target. Keep your uptime clean, avoid wasted Purify casts, and drag the elite into the next wave when the activity allows it.

Against bosses

This is the honest weak point, and it is better said up front than buried. Holy Purifier can kill bosses, but it is built to dominate density, not single targets. Keep Vulnerable up with Purify, lean on Heaven’s Fury for sustained damage, and exploit any add spawns — that is where your chain reaction briefly comes back online. If your goal is pushing boss-heavy endgame, a more single-target Paladin setup will scale more naturally. For a stronger pushing alternative, see our Falling Star Arbiter Paladin build.

Best activities for Holy Purifier

This build earns its keep when enemies arrive in layers:

  • Helltides — constant density keeps the chain reaction rolling.
  • Infernal Hordes — wave-based spawns reward fast area clear over surgical boss damage.
  • The Pit — strongest in tiers where trash packs are the real time sink.
  • Cursed Undercity — clustered enemies let Judgment and Purify overlap well.
  • Chaos Rifts — ideal for efficient seasonal farming.

That profile makes Holy Purifier a strong “get established first” build: easy to bring online, comfortable to pilot once you understand spacing, and very good at farming the content that gears the rest of your season. If you want a leveling-to-endgame Paladin to pair with it, our Paladin Zealous Shredder guide covers the early curve in detail.

Common mistakes

  • Skipping Absolution. Without it, Purify is just a Daze. With it, Purify is your 380% damage and Vulnerable engine — the build does not exist otherwise.
  • Building for duels instead of packs. The whole kit is designed around density. Do not judge it by isolated single-target moments.
  • Casting Judgment into empty space. Hold it for the actual cluster and your clear speed jumps immediately.
  • Overcommitting into melee range. You have Holy Bolt and Ricocheting Bolt for a reason — stay at range and let enemies feed into your detonation zones.
  • Ignoring the set. Without Heaven’s Radiant Fire spreading Judgment and stacking Judgment Day, you lose a huge chunk of your scaling.

Practical takeaway

Run the Judicator Oath, lock in Purify with Absolution as your engine, keep Holy Bolt firing to trigger detonations, and gear toward the Heaven’s Radiant Fire set with the Judicator, Proselytizing, and Golden Hour aspects. Point all of it at dense, wave-based content. For the gear chase, our Griswold’s Opus farm guide covers a strong Paladin-only weapon worth picking up alongside this build. Play Holy Purifier for the content it is meant to crush, and it stops looking merely strong and starts looking unfair.
