Crimson Desert
Crimson Desert is an open-world action-adventure game set in the beautiful yet brutal continent of Pywel. Embark on a journey as the Greymane Kliff and restore…
The Sanctum of Expiation is in northern Demeniss, not Hernand, and it belongs to Areciel, the Witch of Strength. Get those two facts right and the rest is a checklist: clear the Antumbra holding the ruin, burn the vines with Blinding Flash, recover the missing Fusion Reactor Core pieces with Axiom Force and the Kuku Pot, seat them with a jumping Force Palm, then finish with the light-dial timing puzzle that most players never realise is the actual gate. Cleansing it hands you the Kuku Lightning-Resistant Armor blueprint and a Kuku Power Core.
Everything below is checked against the current build. Version 1.13.01, the all-platform hotfix released on 8 July 2026, is the live version at the time of writing; the last major content patch was 1.13.00 (3-4 July 2026), the one that let Oongka and Damiane enter the Abyss and added 40-plus armour pieces. Neither touched this sanctum’s name, its map marker, or the Axiom skills it asks for.
This is where most people lose an hour. There is no “Expiation” sanctum in Hernand – Hernand’s sanctums (Deliverance and Atonement) carry different names and belong to a different witch. Expiation sits in Demeniss, in the northern half of the region, and every major guide describes the same patch of map from a slightly different landmark:
If you already have the Abyss Nexus near Leafshade House, use it and travel south-east; that is by far the shortest approach and saves the long ride up from Kingshield. On the map itself the ruin sits just above the “D” of Demeniss, on a cliff-top with vines choking half the approaches you will need later.

If you came here expecting a “Witch of Goodness” shrine, that is a different chain entirely – those are Bari’s four sanctums, covered in our Witch of Goodness sanctum guide. Do not try to force Expiation to fit that questline.
You can walk into the ruin at any point, but the cleanse will not resolve without The Witch of Strength running. That is the one prerequisite every guide agrees on. Community accounts differ on exactly what triggers Areciel’s first appearance – the coin-to-the-boy-in-Tashkalp route is the most commonly repeated, but it is not confirmed in any official note, so treat it as a community tip rather than gospel. What matters mechanically: if the sanctum will not complete after you have solved it, the problem is a missing quest flag, not a broken puzzle.
You also need main-story progress for the tools:
Approach from the road on the east side. The sanctum is overrun with Antumbra, and the purification readout will not budge while they are alive. Fight through until the area is clear and the short liberation animation plays. Only then does the vine-covered entrance open up as a usable path.
Practical note from the current build: this is a stamina fight, not a damage check. Since the mid-cycle patches that raised Kliff’s base stamina recovery and widened the parry window, the Antumbra pack here is comfortably manageable at level – but if you are still burning consumables to clear it, you are under-geared for what comes later in Areciel’s chain.

Several routes inside are choked with vines and thorns. Charge Blinding Flash and burn them – a fire weapon or fire arrow does the same job. Do this before you start hauling pieces around, because one of those blocked paths leads to the lower level and a hidden chest, and you do not want to be carrying a core when you find it.
The thorn-blocked opening on the lower level needs a crouch-through after burning. It is easy to miss on a first pass; if you are hunting the region’s Frostcursed Plate pieces, this is the pocket of map they turn up in.
Walk to the central device first and read what is missing. In this sanctum you are recovering two things: a broken pillar segment and a Fusion Reactor Core (the one guides name explicitly is Core XIV-I, shown as 14-1 in some localisations).
The first component sits near the roof on the left side of the entry room, sealed in a suspended cube. Aim Axiom Force upward, grab it, and choose Seal to stow it in the Kuku Pot.
The second is behind a wall in a barred room off the northern archway – you can see it but not walk to it. This is exactly what the Kuku Pot exists for: hit it with Axiom Force at range, seal it, then carry it out inside the pot. Some players reach it instead by dropping through the broken floor above; both work.

Back at the device, open your inventory, Use Kuku Pot, and discard the piece to spawn it in front of you. Line it up with the north-western pillar or the empty recess on the reactor body, then jump and drive it down with an aerial Force Palm. A correctly seated piece turns green. If it looks aligned but nothing happens, you have not landed the Force Palm itself – you nudged the object instead of striking it.

This is the step that trips up players who assume the sanctum ends when the pieces are in. With the reactor reassembled, a blue crystal sits at the front of the device, and a circular dial studded with gems begins rotating behind it.
Get the full sequence and the device powers up, the lightning settles, and the central core rises out of the mechanism.

Two things come out of this, and one of them is easy to leave behind:
| Reward | How you get it |
|---|---|
| Blueprint: Kuku Lightning-Resistant Armor | Awarded on cleansing; Areciel appears to thank you. |
| Kuku Power Core | The piece that rises out of the device at the end of the light puzzle. Seal it into your Kuku Pot – it is the reward, not another puzzle component. |
One correction to an earlier version of this guide. We previously listed a Frostcursed Plate Cloak as a guaranteed hidden-chest reward here. That is not supported by the detailed sanctum walkthroughs. What is documented is that Frostcursed Plate gear – the Helm specifically – is found in this same pocket of northern Demeniss, west of the Chattering Rocks, rather than being handed out for cleansing the sanctum. Sweep the burned-open lower tunnel and the surrounding area for chests, but do not count on a specific cloak.
Because the blueprint is a lightning-resistance piece, it slots neatly into the gear you are assembling while you unlock the rest of the elements, and it is a genuine upgrade if you are still working toward your best abyssal gear.
No. It is in northern Demeniss, north of the Gate of Truth and east of Drakesfall Gorge. The Hernand association is a persistent misnaming that spread through early guides and search suggestions.
Areciel, the Witch of Strength. You need The Witch of Strength active before the cleanse will register.
You are recovering two components – a broken pillar segment and the reactor core piece (Core XIV-I). There is no third piece to hunt; if the device will not wake, the missing step is usually the light dial.
Not as of version 1.13.01 (8 July 2026). Post-launch patches through the 1.13 cycle focused on stability, gear additions and companion Abyss access; nothing in the published notes or in updated community walkthroughs changes Expiation’s name, marker, or required Axiom skills.
Get The Witch of Strength running, then take the Leafshade House nexus south-east into northern Demeniss. Clear the Antumbra to liberate the ruin, burn the vines, pull the high pillar piece and the walled-off reactor core with Axiom Force and carry them in the Kuku Pot, then seat both with an aerial Force Palm. Finish by flashing the blue crystal only as gems cross the top of the rotating dial. Seal the core that rises out of the device, pocket the Kuku Lightning-Resistant Armor blueprint, and sweep the burned-open lower tunnel on your way out. Every other sanctum, ruin and boss walkthrough we have written lives on the Crimson Desert hub.
